youtm, i think those ideas are good - having a horizon beyond "the end of this month", and the chance to work up toward a particular event that had a unique personal significance (protest songs in my case), may create an interesting dynamic hitherto unseen in the contest. of course the usual kvr flair for 'grand manipulation of the rules' would be embodied in the ethos; and for extra spice, the moderator could do odd things like switch themes at the 11th hour. this would aid those seeking a professional future in the field gain 'real world' experience. seriously though, alot of my ideas never see the light of day, but might if they could be aligned to a possible outcome 6 months down the line. :)

mind you i'm fortunate in that i don't have to oversee any of this, so markleford thanks for your philanthropy in collating the radio and so on :) the winter contest was a little odd, there seemed a tangible lack of enthusiasm at that time, perhaps the time of year? but i benefitted, got to number 4 :D

I use them a lot I program a lot of it in or play it on the midi controller and then edit which I usually end up discarding in favour of sample loops. Some of the time it resembles the brass lines you have used here. I can't exactly put my finger on it but they sound good but programmed. The vocals are great as usual, their rhythm goes well with the drums.
thanks techbot :) the brass is sounfonts mixed together somewhat. they sound alittle insipid to be honest, i should really spend more time 'fizzing them up' and the like, but i try to do these contests in a day or two, sadly i'm yet to get the sound right first time. i do think i'm improving though, this month marks one year of consecutive contest entries, listening to them all the other day i was struck by the difference in a year :) .

For having two months to work on tunes it was a pathetic, uninspired showing, probably because most people submitted not long after the start of the contest. They didn't even capitalize on the extra track length by developing the work past an ABABAB structure (and some even cried that 4 minutes wasn't nearly enough!).

Bah! BAH, I say! :x

I'm not so sure that was on account of the longer limit. To be scientific about it we would need a few more trials and a control group ...and labcoats, and beakers with bubbling green stuff that gave off vapors...

But I'm just offering a suggestion - and I wouldn't want too do it every month. Just thinking aloud. I really like the short format themed competitions. I like that the music I create for these is different from what I normally do, yet influences how I work. I like the reviews and gossip. And I think its so amazingly cool that this is still an open global community affair that's free (no strings attached), friendly (usually), educational and rewarding with generous feedback and real prizes. I hope this little oasis lasts in the face of it's continued growth. I don't want to break it.

But didn't it have some sheepish, inspiration-sucking theme as well? "The song that defines what you like about music" or something? I just remember the theme was so limp that I never got around to listening to the songs, let alone entering.

I have no opinion on the whole previewing theme thing, happy either way... but I do like challenging themes that stretch you a bit and force you to write something specifically for the contest, not lightly disguised free-for-alls. Free-for-alls are great, but if it's a FFA call it a bloody FFA.

Is it worth bringing up (again) the idea of a sticky thread for theme suggestions, so that themes with a bit of steam behind them might actually see the light of day?

Barnadine, your track.....

OK, it wasn't such a hot idea. I was just seeing where people stand and looking for a way to compromise on the 'longer working time' issue for those that want it while keeping the status quo for those that don't. Must remember to stop trying to fix things that aren't broken. :)

i vote NO for themes previewing and YES for challenging themes.

I'm new here and this is my first contest, but I would have thought the same. Looking through past themes, I like the look of '44 Seconds of FEAR' and 'hurry up'. Not tied to a genre and with plenty room for everyone to contribute their own thing.

oh yeah...now thats groovin. off kilter, and body moving at the same time. fun change ups too. i enjoyed the hell of out of this track. great work! (damn, this is going to be a seriously hard month to judge.)
Thanks!!! Glad you like it. It really fell together except for the bass. I programmed in the notes using the mouse on the CM Eve. But it got swamped in the mix, at least on my shitty creative labs speakers, hence the bass breakdowns. So I left the whole mix fairly raw to compensate.

Apologies to Repirator. That wasn't my review just a note. I was meant to get back to your tune but forgot. I will post a proper review with the next batch.

You": I assume you know I wasn't confining anyone by some kind of generalised statement, as to what is or is not acceptable in music experimentation.

Just pointing out that some genres do have certain qualities that may be linked to inflection in language or socio-economic factors and/or genetic differences. These are often not reproducable outside of that particular environment and any attempt to do so leads to a form of superficiality. (I'm thinking authentic blues recordings or tribal drumming)
It is when the genre is busted open and these qualities are replaced rather than imitated that succesfull cross fertilization occurs. Again this is not even an opinion just a comment.

Saying that, while I'm familiar with Arlo and Bobs work This is the first time I've come across the word Sprechgesang and will do my research.

I note to myself that I criticised Pheeleep for the same, though I liked it when it was in a different language.
