For all the expensive and technically impressive solutions that are out there, if anyone in the NYC area needs to make their voice sound like a woman and cannot afford Powercore, I will kick you in the balls shortly before your recording session for free.

Heartily recommend:

XOXOS' Smokey Joe does the job, despite the artifact inducements.

Didn't the one of the guys from front 242 change their voice to female on 1992's Off album? I thought I read that somewhere and would love to know how he did that because that sounded convincing.

Sorry, but that is pure nonsense here from you.Space Boy wrote:FYIupsidedown wrote:Look after PSOLA (Pitch Synchronous Overlapp and Add) based technology, also known as TDHS (Time Domain Harmonic Scaling). That is in fact the only existing tech, which is actually able to deliver you an acceptable result what you are looking for. But don't expect a miracle! (The result very much depends on the existing formants of the proceeded voice).
All others (i.e. FFT based) will not satisfy you approximately.
Tips (plugins actually using that technology):
- Leapfrog Rephrase (most options for tweakin)
- Steinberg Voice Machine
- AKAI Deca Buddy
- Waves UltraPitch
- J&H OmniVox (currently Beta)
Hardware:
YAMAHA VH150 board (voice Harmonizer).
PSOLA is FFT based in most cases. Quite simply, the 'Overlap Add' part refers to the process of overlapping short term FFT (ST-FFT) segments that have been used for the pitch modification.
The 'Pitch Synchronous' part is realized by tracking signal phase and could easily have been called 'Phase Synchronous Overlap Add' which makes more technical sense.
You also missed 'Choir Boy' off your list of plug-ins.
PSOLA is (mainly or purely) time domain, not FFT (frequency domain).
Althought FFT my be used for pitch detection, but must not ...
I developed that OmniVox, so please forgive me. There is no FFT used.
But probaby there are some hybrid cases...
Thus, Chor Boy has not to be in that list from me above.
You can clearly hear that, if you try to use formant correction with that plugin. It sounds not exactly like the results with PSOLA for some reasons ...
That thesis coming from you ?
Very strange! You should know it better.

I thought Akai's Decabuddy was no longer around? At least in software form.

It is one of the best - no, it is definately the best - vocal harmonizer around.
(Saying that, having build my own.)

it did indeed sound convincing, most likely because of the singer posessing female hardware / being 99 Kowalski (a.k.a. Christine Kowalski).al2k1 wrote:Didn't the one of the guys from front 242 change their voice to female on 1992's Off album?
