Apart from OutKast, The Black Eyed Peas, Dead Prez, and (maybe) Jay-Z, the only thing about rap that I'm not happy about is that there isn't too many of the other styles of rap that are getting enough promotion like it should.

Everything is all gangsta, bling-bling, & crunk. :(

I'll explain the rest of the story later.......

I'm a rapper. Been donin it for seven years . I've been producing for 2 years. I believe I'm working on a new form of hip-hop (hyper-hop?) but I'm a perfectionist so the album won't be done till the end of this year. I really want to reveal it to people but its just not ready. I don't speak on bullshit. I speak on metaphysics, spirituality, psychadelic existence, Death, Life, and the current climax of evolution we are living through. The beats are highly complex with polyrhythms and melody/harmony galore while still having that head bobbing element that most hip-hop has. Making and sharing this music is the primary reason for my existence.....and if I'm doing stuff this "cutting edge" other people are. I f**king HATE most hip-hop, but having grown up in South Central Los Angeles, its been the most influencial form of music in my life and I've been forced to claw and scratch for inspiring Hip-Hop for years. Heres what i got so far. (remember I'm a perfectionist so the list ain't that long.)
Kool Keith (perpetual genius)
M.F. Doom (unparalleled rhyme smith)
Anti-Pop Consortium (new paradigm shit)
Airborn Audio (more new paradigm shit)
Immortal Technique (total social-political badass, with a bit of the metaphysical)
Busdriver (uncontained, comical, sarcastic, lightning fast genius)
If anyone out there knows of other artists of this caliber, PLEASE let me know!

I hate that..you might as well watch hardcore german porn or the latest hiphop video..it's all about the money..it's discusting and vile and has a rotten stench of abuse around it...so does all pop music...it's all rotten to the core, and rap is the worst.
I agree with you there - that's why I pointed out that Dead Prez piece which attacks the way women are being "disrespected" and all the commercial moneymaking. There's that Ms Dynamite song that goes even further that I like. Mind you I've seen quite a few crappy rock videos that seem to promote similar views of women - especially some of that redneck stuff - it's all backwardness combined with desrespect for people and worship of money and superficial things.

to be perfectly honest, I cant see any real difference between the contemporary rap videos of today and the 1980s hair metal band videos - and if you recall, they were pretty explicit back then as well.

Its called money power and arrogance

if you trace the roots of rock back to chuck berry or the similar era artists in the '50s and hiphop to the first chart-topping hiphop single in '79, you could say that around these times hiphop is living its "'80s"... the link between hair metal and g-unit becomes even clearer :)
never stop loving music.

I'm a 50 yr old WASP, no big surprise that I don't care for rap. I tend to prefer vocals with a little melody.
I'm listening to Kool Keith Spankmaster, and the beats and stuff sound pretty cool, but the rapping just leaves me cold.

Kool Keiths "First come First Served" under his alias Dr. Doom is my absolute favorite rap album.
But admittedly, for a long time, I really didn't know what to make of Kool Keith. In fact I hated him in high school. But in high school all I liked was garbage :?

Aesop Rock on defjux - this guy is a lyrical genius, his earlier stuff with blockhead on the beats is exceptional e.g. the labor days l.p.
Illogic is another way talented poetical m.c., check out celestial clockwork for some serious metaphysical type meanderings.
Greenhouse effect - at the moment their life sentences lp & the blueprint e.p. 'prismatic vitamins & minerals' are on constant rotation for me, special mention to 'the orphanage' track 'hold mine' on that e.p. - can't wait till they release an l.p. - Aesop Rock, Slug, Illogic, Eyedea & blueprint together - indeed.

Yeah, I really need to check out more Aesop Rock. I'll give the others a listen too. Thankx! :D

I haven't heard airborn audio or busdriver, will have to see if I can scope them out.
I agree that anti-pop consortium are good, though to be honest I find listening to them for extended periods makes my teeth wobble, but the odd track thrown in a mix is cool.
M.F. Doom is just a pure-bred nutter, one could indeed believe the rumor that he just locked himself in the basement for a few years & then when the time was right decided it was time to assault the airwaves - madvillain is a landmark l.p.
and as for Immortal Technique - the first time I played 'the cause of death' & 'the fourth branch' for a couple of mates they were looking over their shoulders & telling me to turn it down  , especially all that 'i'm gonna hijack a plane & fly it into your house' business.

As for the wider issue - I used to believe I hated rock, but what I hated was guys in spandex sniffing the glove - once i'd heard some soundgarden & alice in chains & other shit I realised that there was a lot more to it.
I hated techno until I heard some of the minimal stuff.
I also seriously went off hip-hop until I was played mike ladd, cannibal ox & aesop rock & then i realised that what i disliked was that whole braindead corporate sponsored scene & that there was a mass of 'underground' stuff of all kinds.
I guess i personally love & hate hip hop, I love some of the music out there, but very rarely have any time for the more commercial side - though I often have to give props to the producers & often to the lyricists flow - shame about the lyrics mo' time.

anyone who says they dont like hip hop owes it to themselves to listen to the following:

A Tribe Called Quest "Low End Theory"

De La Soul "3 feet high and Risng" and "De La Soul is Dead"

Public Enemy "it takes a nation of million to hold us back"

Freestyle Fellowship "Inner City Griots"

Aceyalone "All Balls Dont Bounce"

The Pharcyde "Bizzare Ride To the Pharcyde""

BOTH QUASIMOTO ALBUMS

Madvillian "Madvilliany"

El-P and others on the Def Jux label.

The Roots "Do You Want More?"

Do you still dislike hip hop?

TBH, I cant stand most hip hop but there is that 5% that I just LOVE. Like most popular music most of it is just lowest common denominator drivel but at its best it is extremely creative.

Seriously, if you dont have the time/desire to go through the stuff on my list at least listen to Freestyle Fellowship "Inner City Griots" PLEASE...they really are amazing.
