I'm 99% sure sfz responds perfectly to program and bank changes.. Download and try it.

But it still doesn't include a bank. That's another issue. No point in presenting users with something that doesn't have sounds included. And seriously, there are some people out there who wouldn't know what to do with something like that. It'd need to be as plug and play as possible.

Does sfz respond like built in GM does? you load one GM bank and through program changes (ie: 71 for flute) it knows which patch you want for that track. And each track can be sent through the same instance of sfz? That's not how I visualize sfz working. Maybe OmniSynth, I don't know for sure until I investigate it further.
As I was trying to say with the quote from the help file, Fruity LSD can load any .dls file, and you can convert any soundfont to a .dls file. If it's possible therefore to license the Fruity LSD, you could also licence a GM set to go with it.

But licensing a GM set is tricky business considering you don't always know where the source files came from. Anyone remember Papel? We don't need lawsuits!

So your objective is to licence sounds and create a commercial GM VSTi? Just my opinion, but it sounds like a very difficult and thankless endeavour. Not to mention the questionable commercial viability.

Maybe, its not my idea. I'm just the messenger. LOL

sfz will process any bank changes you send it. If the soundfont is truly GM/GM2, you will get the sound you want. Load sfx in the Master effects track of FLS and set it to port 1. Set any other track with GM data to go to port 1. Voila.

As far as licensing issues; if you create the soundfont using samples you created, you're good to go. sfx is free but rgc:audio also has sfx+ with more features for 60 euros.

the Fruity LSD just loads the "roland" GM soundset included in Direct X 8.

Whoever's idea it is, I think it's a good one. Something smaller than Colossus and bigger than Edirol would find a sweet spot in the market place (IMHO).

Good luck! 8)
