So do psychadelic drugs really help make better music?

I can't believe that people are still considering this idea. With very few exceptions, drugs will tend to make your creative process and your playing worse, not better. That is, drugs that are taken for the purpose of "getting high" or whatever you like to call it. The risks are far greater than any likely benefits.

Taking some proper medication to fight an infection (or whatever) is a totally different concept. I suppose if you have some medical condition that is distracting your creativity, you might write better music while medicated. However, this is obviously not what the original question referred to. :)

Right now, if I had some medicine which made my current headache go away, with no side-effects, I would probably be more creative. I know I would certainly be much happier. :)

I don't know about making music - but my most intense period of writing lyrics happened when I was off my face - didn't do it on purpose I just couldn't stop writing.

Was pissed as a fart last might, and had some dope cake that someone made. Staggered home and knocked the guitars over, top sound.

I still don't completely grok everything I wrote, my sig is from one of the sets of lyrics where I was ranting & raving about pavlov, dead animals, monkeys & typewriters & then changed direction & went off on one about mr ben (from the kids t.v. series) & the crucifixion.
Maybe the fact that i'd been a wee bit ill headwise (close to a section) & on the old antidepressant previously contributed.
Shame, now i'm pretty much sane & almost drug free writing lyrics is a chore again.

Taking LSD and mushrooms completely changed my life for the BETTER. I wouldn't try and create a song in my studio on hard hallucinogens, but I have freestyled (spontaneous rap, for the uninitiated) with my former rap crew on hallucinogens and it was totally incredible. I DO however do studio work AND write lyrics on pot and 80% of the time it contributes very well to my creative process.

Drugs in general and psychedelics even more doesn't work in a linear equation form, for instance Cubase SX+NI FM7+ PSP Nitro+ half LSD Blotter = Good Music... That equation could equal good music, or shitty music or mediocre, or funny or boring music. Same goes for the equation Cubase SX+ NI FM7 + PSP Nitro + No drugs at all.
Some people can make memorable records completely out of their butts ("Sabbath Bloody Sabbath") or directly awful records (Amon Düül I's "Psychedelic Underground"). Some people make excellent music in complete sobriety (Astor Piazolla) and some other sucks seriously in the same state (all evangelic AOR Rock, for instance).
A moron + LSD is a moron on LSD, a wise guy+ LSD is a wise guy on LSD. Period.

Only if you buy them I understand.

The situation with picking them wild is the same as it ever was, as long as you don't "prepare" them they're still legal.

I could be wrong, but that's the way I read it.

look setting fire to your guitar is not musically creative it's more like: "man, i'm so f**ked right now i cant even see, my willy has shrunk and my farts smell chemical, lets just burn this fuckin guitar, pretend i'm f**king it then get the f**k off stage cause some gave me bad acid man."

shrooms - i wrote some of my best tunes/lyrics/poems/short stories while on shrooms.

coke - I hear it's great for gigs if you can use it for energy boost. don't seem to help with 'creativity' though. Also, it's bitch to sing while on coke with all the drips. nasty stuff.

pot - it's fun and nice but you get too used to them too quickly. hard to even consider them as 'drugs' after a while.

in general, depending on people drugs can really help with creativity, but I think you need to be a creative person in the first place for it to work.

With pot, you can do almost anything while stoned if you are used to it. i had bongs and joints like half an hour before school interviews/final exams and all sorts of things before and everything always turned out ok (got into school, managed to graduate with the final exam score on pot, etc). Also wrote my uni dissertation while completely stoned. I wouldn't smoke before/during work though since I graduated though.

However, even pot doesn't seem to be very good for me when I'm trying to mix stuff. it's great for coming up with musical ideas/tunes, but if I'm trying to judge between fractionally different multiband compressor settings or between 0.5 decibel EQ cut on 1600Hz or 1750Hz and shit like that, being stoned is realy not good.
