I want to know what you listen to besides hip hop. I an genuinely curious to hear what non - hip hop cds you have purchased recently, and why. This is just a friendly poll, no mal intent here.

I'm a fan of music of the 1970's & 1980's. Basically, almost anything with keyboard synths & drum machines interest me.

I like all music genres except for thrash/death metal, most traditional country music, and trance!!! 8)

I listen to a lot of minimal techno, dub-techno, dub (prince fari through jah-shaka to more modern steppas gear), some rock (deftones, soundgarden, tool), radiohead, classical (when the mood hits), jazz (particularly like marsalis & arturio sandoval), reggae (think bob marley, burning spear, wailing souls etc.), Love blues (howling wolf, muddy waters, furry lewis, sleepy john estes, lightning hopkins - & all that delta blues).
when I go out I don't mind some dancehall & u.k. garage.
There's a shit load more I listen to - eclectic, but why limit yourself to a particular genre?

I share yer love of 70s music, but not so much 80s. Jazz/funk and classic rock had a lot in common then. Alot of "heavy metal" from the 70s had some serious groove to it. Early Black sabbath and led zepplin come to mind...

last few cd's:

Jerry Reed's greatest hits. I like country, especially twangy country. It's got a soul of its own. I've always loved Willie, Johhny, Waylon and such.
Oingo Boingo: Skeletons in the Closet - my favorite band of all time, bar none. Here I stand. Perhaps because every song is burned into my early memory. Quirky, changing, dark, fun. Just hits me where it counts every time. Scratched this cd and wanted to replace it!
..what goes around comes around..

ohh right it was cd's bought wasn't it?
I haven't bought a non hip hop cd in ages, i've mostly just been downloading loads of mp3's from netlabels like thinner & kyoto.
I did buy a sleepy john estes compilation a couple of months ago.
& I picked up a couple of capleton cd's.

DnB/Trance, mostly. Some ambient, acoustic, and house on those more uppity days.

I'm not a self-proclaimed "anything-head", but I do like to get my regular dose of hip hop.

Nina Simone - The Blues
Rage Against the Machine - two first albums were on sale
Miles Davis - Tutu
Beck - Guiro
Deftones - Adrenalin
LBJ - Live Music
Ismo Alanko - Pulu & Kun Suomi putos puusta

The last two hip hop cd's were Paris's, finally burned from my friend's LPs, just couldn't find them from the rec shop. Maybe later. Gonna buy some cds tomorrow* the recommendations from the other thread.

* I love to celebrate the payday by going to the record store and just buy whatever feels good at the moment

How do you like that? I've been meaning to pick that one up. I'm a BIG fan of the older Beck stuff like Odelay and Mellow Gold. Every one of is albums is so different, it's hard to know what you're getting when you buy one. I heard the one single, and it reminds me a bit of the older quirky stuff, how does this album compare to that?

Post

Hypertone, I have to say it has some tracks that just don't cut it, easy-forget jaadajaada stuff... but also 3-4 real gems and sing-alongs :D Guero (had to check, sorry for misspelling it) has a part party, part folk vibe going on which I like a lot, and overall production is very good, but more clean & polished than earlier stuff.

Mind you, these comments come after aprox five spins, whereas older Becks have been rotating for years so I can't really compare. Perhaps I expected more, but was not a waste of money.
