Comments- Part 1.

Quick comments, not actual reviews. There are a lot of entries that I like this month. The most I have ever liked so far in a comp entry, and I still have many to listen to.. that's some crazy stuff..

JamesB- Very nice groove. I really like the part at 1:17 a lot ( wah part ). Too bad the drums aren’t louder, and bassier. I like the laid back, yet head bumping vibe. I’m shaking my head, but I don’t have the urge to get on the dancefloor J I can definitely picture people dancing to this though.

Wopelka:. I really like your choice of instruments, but I am not feeling what you did with them as far as dancing is concerned. It would be a great bit for a movie along the lines of “Delicatessen”. A movie with Weirdness, chaos… Good job though.

RichieBee-Dance to this: Perfect for this month’s theme. Very good. As a bonus, I’d love to hear it mixed in with a House beat.

Liqih: It is danceable. It’s a good start to something but it feels incomplete. Could be in the next episode of Inspector Gadget, with him shaking his booty to the beat… I like it.

Armadillo: Panther. Definitely danceable. Great production. I really like the intro a lot. Vocals seem a bit too loud ( but not the speaking part ). Is that you singing? I like it.

Multree: You belong to me. Really good song. Danceable. Whhaaaaaaattttt? Only 1 minute long? Why? Hey are those drums BFD?

Tristeza Orange: I really like the organ melodies a lot. The “?harpsichord?” sound. In all it’s weirdness, I find it catchy. Too bad there is no bass on it.

Damstraversaz: Pepe va au bal.. yup it’s danceable. Good job.

Scuzzphut: Screamer. Definitely danceable. I really like the first part, am not crazy about the other synth line that comes in afterwards for a couple measures. Then, it gets really good again before that synth comes back in. Very nice work.

Farlukar: I am not a fan of distortion, and it seemed you really went for it on this one ( on the overall mix). I think I would have enjoyed a cleaner version better, but other than that great work. Definitely danceable.c

Hovmod: last fairwell tango. Sounds good. More laid back than other entries, but there is slow dancing. I enjoyed it.

Shuzhen:Epic Shapes Ellapse: Very nice. Simple but effective. It makes me want to dance.

Katanaman: Dance with moi. I like what you did here, and the sounds you used.

Patrick9: Konversation. It gets better when the synth kicks in, but it’s too much distorted madness for my taste J

Kaos Axiom: DanceXT. Broken link.

Ja.x: Toast Yourself.. Not bad, not great. A little monotonous.

Rockstar_Not: I like your entry. Funky synth pop. Nice.

Bitcrusher: My first Guru. Nice one man. I like it. Those are some cool non drumish sounds.as well. I haven’t come across them yet in GURU. Much more to explore.

Knockman: Wildchurch. I like it in a weird way.

Andreas E: Dance of the animals. Could be a good circus song. Haha.. the speeding/up slowing down is a nice touch.

Aldred: twinkletoes. Sparkling production. Could be great in a movie. Only 1:04? Why??

Astanine: Halothane: It’s good. I like it. Makes me in a happy mood. Why only 1:35? Grrr..

Wilkoryte: Slow dance. Nice one. Makes me relaxed.
Play it by ear

Now these...

j_T/Fonk'n'stein - Fun. Good arrangement, but the performance perhaps needs a little more attention to really lift off. The programmed parts are slightly too stiff to kick into real funk territory. Overquantised? The timing on the brass could be a bit tighter (e.g. around 1:06) and the bass would benefit from being more central and emphatic, I think. Maybe a bit of panning would stop the kick drum stepping on the bass guitar. Or maybe just a trimmer kick sample. At the moment they're fighting for space. The vocals are a bit fuzzy and clouded, couldn't make them all out. Sorry, my comments are sounding overcritical, but the basic bones of the song are strong, and there's nothing here that can't be fixed up pretty easily. Just needs a bit of tying together and tightening up, no worries. As I said, good solid arrangement.

Beardedone/Spinner Fall - That main synth does have certain hovering insect sound, and the melody line flits about like a mayfly. As knockman says, the power of suggestion. The sober piano chords underpin things nicely in the great first half, anchoring down the slightly attention-deficit lead. The sixteenth percussion doesn't sit as well with me in the latter half, and it loses a bit of that meditative quality. But I'm glad you found a way into a theme that didn't appeal to you. As with astanine, it might be interesting to see you step outside your comfort zone from time to time. But you obviously love what you're doing, and that's a good thing regardless.

Jaidy/Zisorzat - I think you're relying a bit too much on delay in this song. You tend to swamp parts in so much delay that they lose their rhythmic impetus and start to sound indistinct and mushy. The percussion is a bit shy and hesitant for a dance song, and the drum fills don't feel particularly natural. But there are lots of signs here of something more interesting waiting to be explored. The fluttery airy synths at the start, for example, feel like they're from another song, and though they don't really tie into the beat here, they open up a whole range of possibilities, as does the synth break at 0:40.

herodotus/Frogs Don't Dance - There's a hell of a lot I like about this, so I'm going to take the easier, lazier route and nitpick the few small niggles. The cutout at 0:51 lets a bit of the suspense slip away, and feels like a golden opportunity to get some deeper bass element or low percussion creeping in, to avoid regression. The high frequencies on the bell sound become fairly wearing over the course of the song, but nothing that can't be fixed with a bit of eq, or by occasionally switching that motif to another instrument to give the ears a rest. And I found the end frustrating, cutting out just as an interesting new space was being explored. Bah. Tease. But I really like this - dramatic and sombre. Wonderful palette of sounds, especially the vocal-sounding background pads. Good luck with the ballet. Sounds like it'll be mighty interesting.

First page of reviews.

Not a good week for trance peeps I'm afraid. I'm just not in the mood. But the quality of the better tunes out there is really outstanding this month. Long live Funk. I should have my tune finished by tomorrow maybe.
If any wants/does not want their tunes streamed on my shoutcast radio would you PM me.

Aedia Cin: Very Vangelis. The sounds are well chosen for this piece as a whole, but individually they are all to familiar. The mixing is top notch. But no real hook for me.

Aldred: Brilliant Great strings great sounds Very short but confidently so. Top effort.

Andreas E: Lunacy. Very funny great mixing and arrangment and a spot on choice of sounds, that complement with each other. I love the false ending I have one like that for this month too.

Andy: Cool vibe. The waves are a bit cheesy. In fact the whole tune is very cheesy. Good choice of melodies and such but a few new sound techniques woul'nt go astray.

Armadillo: Good Vocals. Well mixed but it's tarnce.

Astanine 80's tarnce Thats a heavy bass nicely mixed with a cheesy nod to Popcorn.

*Beardedone: I'd like to hear Youtm do a mashup of my Dances round the maypole with your Dances of the mayflies spinner. Worlds apart but the same theme I think. I was confused until the drums kicked in coz the lead sound seemed so dominant over the piano. But it makes more sense once you know the drums are coming ( ie on second listen). The sounds converse with each other really well and always demand really close attention. I like the almost throaty quality of the opening sound(some kind of formant filter?), but it is your drum programming that intruques me at the moment.

Bit crusher: Nice easy going easy on the ears. Well mixed, well structured ,but nothing to make it memorable.

*Damstraversaz: The intro totally me fooled me I thought ah two minutes of therimin tweaking then the voice came in and I though ah well it least it will have voice tweakings as well then BAM! Big balsy bass and some strange Gabriel Yared type stuff. Top Notch. Shortlisted

Farlukar: Excellent Track: Excellent bass sounds and programming. The lead sound/melody a tiny bit too poppy on occasions especially 0:39-0:46

Freeztar Full on!! A bit chaotic but great fun too listen to and Dance to I'm sure. Very Very phat mix, totally engaging.

*GregJazz: I'm stunned. Shocked. Speechless!!!!!!!!!I can't get over this. This belongs to an era that went from being the most influental to me to the shit that has forced me to become a hermet. SOUL. Think The FatBack Band, George Clinton, Otis Redding, Bill Withers and Michael Jackson before the days of Beyonce, Lady J and Michael Jackson. You sit proudly with the former. Truly stunning effort.

Herodotus: I like the bass build up, not sure about the bells, I prefer when they sit back in the mix. Pad is cool Drums are great. Very long buildup piece with only two minutes is bound to anticlimax.

Hovmod: Last Farewell Tango: Emotional piano. Really well played the rest of the instruments surround it well focusing all of the attention to where it should be - the piano.

*IXOX: Briliant. Smooth. You've got shitloads of class. Shortlisted

Kaos: Standard Trancey effort. A bit like a entry from two months ago but without vocoded vocals. This is missing hook (or some kind or some vocoded vocals)

Knockman: I think maybe my ears are starting to gain a bit more sophistication. I love brass. I use them a lot I program a lot of it in or play it on the midi controller and then edit which I usually end up discarding in favour of sample loops. Some of the time it resembles the brass lines you have used here. I can't exactly put my finger on it but they sound good but programmed. The vocals are great as usual, their rhythm goes well with the drums.

Kovacs: Vocals are cool but needs to be lowered. Lyrics are cool too. Woud like to hear this tune (longer and properly mixed)

Katanan: Cool modern take on funky. Great drums. Love the wah wah. Just missing some funky vocals.

Khepira: Are these vocals from the same sourse as your previous entry? Funky track. I little bit chaotic but nonetheless a really fine tune.

*Liqih: F**king Brilliant. As I said earlier I love brass and I love what you did with those rimshots/hats or whatever. Is that really you playing the typewriter? Stunning. Great bass too man!

Mchlwisn: There are some really good sounds going on in this mix and it's well structured. I like the bass drum way back in the mix. but the lead is too straightforward.

Mully: Very indie with a heavy 80's feel. well produced, very short but the basis of a tune is there.

Patrick9: Very LOUD! Love the crowd samples. And I like its power. Don't like the bright Electric Piano-xylophone sounds. I think the sounds could have bounced off each other rather than all fighting for attention. Very loud. But thats like a real conversation isn't it - several monolgues going at once.

Pheeleep: Simple but haunting bass. Minimal drums. Great sounds. Top production. The opening vocal is good and of course I like its sentiment. The keys are simple but effective. I don't like too much speaking in tunes, so I didn't like the "make music for love....." lines but I really like the quite french speak in the background.

Repirator: The bass clicks probably deliberate but it always happens to me and it isn't deliberate.

*Richiebee Funky! Excellent but the sax is a little too loud. shortlisted

Rockstar not: I love the Clav. Tasty. It's totally cool. Great bass. BUt the lead brassy synth, while it holds the tune well enough, nonetheless robs it of it's authentic 70's funk as rebellion vibe.

RSMUS A tarnce meets eighties track. I like the pad at 1:21 But the rest of the sounds are very standard. But mixed well enough

Scuzzphut: Screaming tarnce! No doubt this would go down well at a club. Just not my style. Well mixed tho.

*Shuzen Great track Jazzy Elcectic beats, smooth bass. The leads syth changes tone enough to give a variation to a well worn sound. Me likes.

Ja X: Good use of echo ( I take it you use it a lot) very convincing Dub effort. The synth vocals are top(minimal) and work the tune. But the brass stands out as not being slick, laid back, dub standard.

Jaidy: Mixed well enough, I 'm sure you have accomplished what you set out to do. But as to anybody doing this music. To somebody who is not into it all sounds the same. This is not the case with ALL genres. THere are plenty of tunes that I wouldn't subcribe to but still see the merit. It's rare that Trance techno has this and it deserves it's ill rep.

Jamesb: Great! Smooth bass, nice keys. Very chilled. I like a lot. MAybe a bit too low in the volume dept.

*Scarabeus: Funky. tight bass, Great guitar, convincing brass. Confident minimal Vocals

Tristeza Orange: Snare seems too dominant for most part but the way they bounce of the tuba is great. Totally mad arrangement. Very toe tapping, not sure about dancing. At least not unless your a professional otherwise you could do some serious damage. A really enjoyable tune to listen to.

Ugo: This is really good. Surprisingly. But I assume its not sctrictly tarnce. Good opening drums. The drums really drive forward. I really like that. The synth sound is a bit too familiar (no biggie). Crashes are spot on, rising arp (always works). Plenty of climaxes. Good work.

*You": Now this is pure madchester type stuff. Top production Great Vocals. Great arrangement. As always I'm in awe at your multi-talents. I never really have any constructive criticisms. Till now. But I didn't think the rap was of the same standard as everything else. It wasn't bad or anything. But since I have such high expectations from everything you do do I thought I'd point it out. I hope this doesn't get me flamed but I don't like white rap. I've tried wording this other ways and I can't. But when Wopelka raps it has a very distinct french authentic sound. And I've heard really good Thai rap (I think it was thai), and of course many white people can emulate the black sound convincingly. But white rap sounds wrong to me. However the lyrics themselves are cool. Do you gig? If you ever come to Ireland. You'd be able to spot me immediatley I'd be the lunatic in the middle of the dancefloor.

Vurt: Ouch That hurt. Reminds my of Eraserhead. I'd like to hear this at a mainstream club inbetween Beyonce and Westlife, and then be the only one on the floor dancing as if it were an Elton John and George Micheal duet. Kinda shuffling my feet like grandad at a wedding reception. Oblivious to the mass-hari kiri taking place arounnd me, as all the young people in their white and pink jumpsuits and imported bottled beers ,are suddenly and rudely shown that there is a bigger world out there and just can't handle it. Dance or Die! I luv it.

Wilkortye: Slowdance. Oh my God. It sounds exactly like what I would have heard at the local disco 20 years ago bottling out of asking some girl I fancied to dance. This brings back terrible memories. Well executed, but why Oh why would you do this to me.

Wopelka: I would have expected this more in the Spring competiton. Very ecocative of woodlands and the little people. Cool Instrumentation. Great strings in the background.

reviews pt 2...

please let me know if i miss anyone. also this batch of reviews is being done on headphones so comments about the mixes (or lack of comments) should be taken with that grain of salt.

rsmus7 - Poddies Dance
very light hearted and somewhat infectious. this would make for a great soundtrack for a platformer game. nice break too.

j_T - The Return of Fonk'n'stein
pros: well put together, good effort at trying to get a band sound. (always a difficult task.) guitar fits well in the mix.
conts: im afriad im not feeling the funk. for this style of funk, i would have like to have heard something that gives a deeper, darker, more slippery, greesy kind of feel. the horns feel kind of stiff.

Beardedone - Spinner Fall
nice emotional feel, excellent job at capturing a 'bug voice.' it matches your description very well. great interpretation of the theme...im glad you entered gordon. :)

Jaidy - Zisorzat
classic old school bassline hook, but i really would have like to have see this progress more musically rather than just be a solo section.

herodotus - Frogs Don't Dance
wow, this really draws me in. although its a sketch, its a very promising one. it made me excited to hear where it would go. it would have been nice if the main bell theme had a change in it somewhere within the 2 minutes though. when you get more of the ballet done, let me know.

Ixox - Un tout dernier tango
very theatrical, very cool.

freeztar - So Danco Samba!!!!!
light hearted and i like the style you did your vocals in. mabey its the drums but i cant help but cant help but feel a little nintendo in there somewhere. i never thought i'd say this...but mabey there's a little too much filtering going on with the bass. .god knows i love filtering, but between the filter and the overdrive on such a quick line, its almost a bit distracting.

mchlwlsn - Seeker
cool, mysterious vibe. i would have like to have heard it develop more though. i dig the extra touch filtering at the end.

You™ - Feedback and Oscillate (Recursion Mix)
damn, this is very well done. slick groove, great production, and a hell of hook. i cant help but move to this.

kovacs - What I Want To Do
strong hook and great job with your first vocal track! (it inspires me to try again...i havent even attempted any vocals in many years.) imho, the vocals are mixed too up front though. they dont really integrate into the reast of the track. im not sure about the bassline. its a good accent, but i think the track would benefit from a more full bassline. as an alternative to having cut the cymbal tail so short, i wonder if you could have dropped out the music slightly earlier and ended with just 'play my guitar' dry and unaccompanied. i dont know if it would work or not...just an idea.

Andy - Summer on the Sea
very carefree, cruise kind of vibe.

Barnadine - A Man of Grace
oh...nice one...damn. theatrical and very intriguing. excellent change up at 0:55...just when you might loose the audience a bit, this just grabs them by the collar and pulls them back into the performance. good delivery too. well done.

To the end of page three...

Ixox/Un tout dernier tango - The tango master returns. Somehow, the French language seems a natural fit for this kind of romantically charged dance. I like the sound of the Sam trumpet. On the nitpick front: the brushed cymbals seem a bit erratic and out of time in the intro, and I'm not too sure about that snare sound. The violin (Kirk Hunter?) does an admirable job; some of the higher passages bring the artificiality to notice, but it's probably as good as you can expect without a live player. In a perfect world, every home studio would come with a pet string quartet. If you didn't need them for a track, you could have them retile the roof or something. But these are small complaints; this is a proud, confident tango, well arranged. And "my wife (breathing)" on your gear list made me laugh.

freeztar/So Danco Samba - Catchy groove, innit? I really love that grubby, rubbery sound - sorry I can't define it better, but you can probably guess the one I mean. What's making that sound? Curious minds need to know. Some adventurous chord changes here, some more satisfying than others, but better that than predictability. The mix feels overcompressed and distorted in places, and while there might be some award for loudest entry, I'm the kind of person who'd prefer you to sacrifice some loudness for the sake of dynamics. Clipped ending, grr... And oh yeah - um, yo! fo real dis shit be... Nah, sorry, an Aussie just can't pull it off. This shit is nice.

mchlwlsn/Seeker - The mix feels quite narrow and enclosed, perhaps because the main song elements are all too centrally panned, or routed through the same effect. Though it's quite an interesting result, it means I never felt like I was inside the song, more observing it from outside. It'd be nice if those big synths hit like thunderstorms, but they're at a safe distance. And I think the bass could be beefed up a bit. But mix issues aside, there's a nice foreboding atmosphere here. The song alternates well between the two themes; maybe a third contrasting section would help things develop. Solid, straight-up dance.

utm/Feedback and Oscillate (Recursion Mix) - Nice gloopy intro sounds. Driving rhythm. And your usual intricate, detail-filled mix. So why my reservations? At the risk of another scuzzphutian monologue for two, I didn't get as much sense of character from this as I expect from your stuff. The two-note vocal melody fits the mood well enough, but slips right out of my head once the song is done (which supports the theme of the lyrics, I suppose). Your truly excellent Midas's Ears mined the Sprechgesang vein more inventively and melodically, I think. The bass feels a bit underfed, but I've been saying that so much this month that I'm starting to suspect a fault with my speakers. (Why is everyone scared of bass in a dance music month? Crazy.) There are interesting elements, like the downsliding backing vocals, that seem a bit embryonic and underdeveloped. But look, there's nothing really wrong here, it's just lacking that little extra for me. Or maybe I just unconsciously raise the critical bar for kvr's high achievers. (By the way, I had similar feelings about 5ives, which nearly won the comp, so the important lesson here is to disregard anything I say. :D)

kovacs/What I Want To Do - The vocals are great. First time, you say? Keep 'em coming! You've placed them very upfront, which is brave for a first time singer, and gives a real intimacy, but it does threaten to dominate the mix here. In the verses, the backing music sounds like it's coming from another room. Like that Björk track recorded in a nightclub toilet. The chorus sections are wonderful, and more balanced. The shift from verse into chorus is very well handled, but the shift back from chorus to verse isn't as satisfying. Maybe needs a little bridge section. But this is a revelation, makes me wonder how many other undiscovered singers we've got lurking at kvr. Nice guitar too. Keep singing.

Andy/Summer on the Sea - A relaxed, nostalgic vibe. And the song seems like a tribute to those big brown old family organs where you'd press the rhumba button, then hold down a single note, and it would play a jaunty little rhumba pattern. Then you'd hold down another note, and it would play exactly the same thing in a different key. Ah, good times. But the downside of this is that the song doesn't really hold together tonally. It just hops from key to key without any sustained melodic development, and without quite becoming interestingly multitonal. But there's a naive charm here.

MG505/Shake It - Link not working? I'll try again later.

part 3...

MG505 - ShakeIt
couldnt get the file to load. i got a 'page cannot be displayed / cannot find server' error. i'll try back again later on.

Joenco - Go_Jeanne
same problem as MG505's link.

nikp2000 - the_bollywood_hillbillies
pretty cool...not a major booty shaker, but definitely a toe tapper and quite enjoyable. interestingly, something about the first 18 seconds reminds me of an old dylan song but i cant place which one yet. the mix could use some more definition and ballenceing.

Techbot - Ballam de nana Haydum De
oh yeah...now thats groovin. off kilter, and body moving at the same time. fun change ups too. i enjoyed the hell of out of this track. great work! (damn, this is going to be a seriously hard month to judge.)

mystahr - summer's breeze
nice subtle groove mark! as opposed to a jam that immediately grabs you, instead this one sneeks up on you and quietly encourrages you to start moving. it whispers 'get down' rather than shouts it. nice filter work too.

Brief comments part 2 ( If I forgot someone, sorry, let me know.. )

GregJazz: I remember really liking yours. Top notch. I can’t redownload it right now for some reason. Please fix that so I can download it again.

Khepira: Dance for oil. I like the drum beat and the brass parts, but not crazy about the vocal bit (ee-aille-ah), or the lead synth sound.

Respirator: waltz: Simple and enjoyable. I like the way you panned the instruments. A little too repetitive.

Vurt: Dance or die it’s your choice. There is no melody. It’s just a bunch of noise to me, sorry. I actually stopped listening half way through. It was starting to give me a head-acke.

Aieda-cin: Forrage. Relaxing/atmospheric piece. Makes me shake my head, but not dance. I like it.

Ugo: Bonfire. Nice one. Not the kind of music I listen to, but well done.

Rsmus 7: Sounds like video game music. It’s a little too cheesy for my taste… I can’t see myself dancing to this..

JT: The return of Fonk’nstein: I like this. With some real brass, it would be killer. Definitely danceable.

Beardedone: Once the drums came in, I started enjoying it more. It was a little too all over the place before that ( but I know that’s your style ).

Jaidy: I like it. The way it ended wasn’t that great. Could have worked on that some.

Herodotus: Frogs don’t dance. This one got me from the start. It’s simple, but it’s got everything I like. Percussions, bells, atmospheric sounds.. You could develop it even more, but I like it.

Ixox: Un tout dernier tango. Very nice work. Love it when the vocals kick in. Good call singing on this one!

Freeztar: So Danco Samba. Interesting song. Not one of my favorites so far, but it’s not bad.

Mchlwlsn:Seeker. I like it. Nice work. Maybe try adding some brass hits on it. I think it would make it even better.

Utm: Feedback and Oscillate. This is cool. Definitely danceable. Not what I would usually listen to, but I enjoyed it.

Kovacs: What I want to do. I like the music in the background, but it sounds too muffled or something . I am not feeling your voice. Sorry.

Andy: Summer in the sand. Perfect to put me in a happy mood. Relaxing. I like it.

Barnadine: A man of grace. Very nice composition. Catchy. Very emotional piece. For some reason I want you to sing in French on this one.. any chance of that happening? :-o

MG505: can’t find server.

Joenco: Go Jeanne. Pretty cool. Not too crazy about the lead synth sound. Nice drum work. I really like the dramatic orchestral bit. Nice touch.

Nikp2000: The Bollywood hillbillies. Interesting track. Not my kind of music though..

Techbot: Ballam de na na… I like it a lot. The drums and guitar the most. A tad too repetitive, but it’s pretty catchy. I really like the second vocal parts ( sanduhm eenai? .. or whatever is being said.. lol.. )..

Mystahr: Summer’s breeze. I like this. Could be developed more though. Feels incomplete.

Scamme: It’s all synthetic. Nice piece. Definitely danceable J A tad repetitive. I don’t usually listen to this kind of music so what do I know...

Glooper: Disco Mission. Really like this one from the start. Crowd noise goes in well at the beginning .

Warbug: DOA. Very nice work. I love the intro/outro and great job with the Jungle/ragamuffin part..

Col G. Mc Loser: Not feeling it, sorry. Well recorded/mixed except for the vocals. They sound a bit too bland. I take it you don’t like to put effects on your vocals?

Kaze : Jinro and other spirits. Really cool. Unusual, which it makes it really interesting. Nice piece to sit back to. I guess I could dance to this, in a very unusual way J

Pepelogu: I feel for KVR. Very nice drums. I like the synths used as well. Definitely makes me want to dance. The vocoded vocals are a nice touch. Nice work.
Play it by ear

Post

From the start of page 4 to the current era:

Joenco/Go Jeanne - Okay, I admit it suprised me. I was settling in for two minutes of synth-twiddlin' dance - slightly whiny but nicely mutating lead; not especially memorable, but pleasant enough... Then you move off on a really interesting tangent. It's a great move, and my question is, why not sooner? You hit a much richer vein at 1:20, and I would have loved you to develop the whole disintegrating orchestra thing further. That section ends far too soon, gone before you know it. The coda seems overlong, as though extended mostly for the sake of hitting the two minute mark - just makes me think of all the extra time you could have spend on the weirdness. Let me know if you ever decide to expand this. :)

nikp2000/Bollywood Hillbillies - Excellent stuff. Sure, it gets sloppy in places (just adds to the charm), and the recording is pretty lo-fi (but who cares?). It's a great idea, done well. I really enjoyed it, and it'll probably get a vote from me. Easy review. Cheers.

Techbot/Ballam de nana Haydum De - Classy and eclectic. Interesting stew of influences, from the jazz scat vocals to the bigbeat-meets-India(?) percussion. And some great little downturns, where the bass works off a bit of steam while the rest of the song regroups. Obligatory nitpicking: you almost tire the vocal samples out, we never seem to get them in less than batches of eight. And the new vocal at 1:28 is too buried in the mix to have a real impact. But this is a great collage of sounds, with energy to burn.

mystahr/summer's breeze - The little percussive sounds are excellent, and I like how they carry on their own inscrutable conversation behind the main rhythm. Nice synth work, things evolving constantly to maintain interest. And a well thought out arrangement, the background swooshes playing well against the foreground sounds. It's got a cuddly but slightly creepy vibe I associate with that old song about teddybears having a picnic. Innocent little faces, but you can bet they're hatching some evil plan for world domination. This grows on me with every listen.

scamme/It's All Synthetic - If you're going to stick with a short 4 bar chord sequence for an entire song, you need lots of incidental variation, and there's quite a bit here. The guitars cut in to give things a bit of a jackboot edge, and other elements pop in and out enough to keep things from getting boring. But my personal taste would like to see you play up the more unusual elements of the song (e.g. the background noises around 0:28 ) and push it all in a more experimental direction. And change the chords from time to time. But as I've said before, I'm not the best judge when it comes to mainstream dance like this. Everything seems to be functioning within operational parameters. :)

Glooper/Disco Mission - You're a bit of a chameleon, aren't you? I'm impressed. Good hefty bass, and nice use of crowd sound. I'm probably laughably off the mark here, but that isn't you pitchshifted and effected for the main verse vocals, is it? The 'get your body' vocals (which probably aren't you ;)) wander off pitch a little, and aren't my cup of beverage, but are pretty much obligatory for this kind of song. This isn't necessarily a musical era I was eager to revisit, but it's a classy recreation, spiced up with a few modern twists which for some reason brought to mind Basement Jaxx. (P.S. What's a chav?)

warbug/DOA - Great underwater intro. And I really love the bass that comes in at 0:20. This has a great energy, and the vocals are a good match for the mood. Don't really have any technical criticisms, though once again, a bit of small variation to individual drum hits would spice up the percussion. On the shortlist.

Col.G/MC Loser - Whoa. Courageous 'tuning' on the guitar. ;) There's lots of interestingly stroppy stuff going on here... The only big problem was that I felt like I was missing out on half the song - maybe it's because I'm not American, but I found the lyrics pretty much indecipherable. And your lyrics are usually worth hearing too. I think I understood about two and a half words, max. Any chance of a lyrics sheet? Or a translation? Or just a vague clue what the song's about? But that didn't stop me enjoying the bit where you go all James Brown. Hunh! Heh.

kaze/Jinro and Other Spirits (Dance of) - 'Silly'? No way. You evoke a very nice mood here. Some of the timing gets a little bit sloppy for the elegance this kind of music seems to demand, but it does give things a vulnerable human dimension. The... shamisen? (I don't know my Asian instruments too well) - the one panned to the right that carries the bulk of the song - doesn't always integrate perfectly with the rest of the mix, and is sometimes programmed in ways that sound a bit more like keyboard playing than string playing. But these are small points. Very nice.

pepelogu/KVR - And last month's vocoder frenzy continues. :scared: :hihi: But that aside, I have to compliment you on your main beat. Tight, no-nonsense, and the sounds themselves are very solid and satisfying. Some more variation to the pattern would be good, but it's an excellent anchor for the song, and gives the spacier elements something physical to contrast with. (And don't worry about the vocoder thing, just a personal allergy of mine.)

Unqualified reviews for July as Glooper's download tool puts them on my machine. Not going into great detail here, PM me if you want explanations. I feel it's my duty if I've entered to do reviews. So, without further delay....

Andy - Summer on the Sea

General Midi turn me off instantly - Sorry. Also, it sounds quite mono.

Warbug - DOA

Not my style, but production is quite well done.

Kaze - Jinro et al

Very interesting and original for KVR. Inspired, but by what substance?

Kovacs - What I want to do

Not necessarily dance-able, but I like it nonetheless. Lyrics match non-danceable impression. I really like the several flavors of guitar over top of the electronica drum loops. Fade out a little abrupt.

Barnadine - Man of Grace

Barnadine channels Knockman for July, with an equally haunting set of instrumentation. Real nylon string guitar or sampled? Tango anyone?

Col G - MC Loser

If the muppet show was still on TV, I can picture this with Animal doing the rap. Very entertaining. Here's what I would like to hear on this song - if you know Adrian Belew, have him show up with his fretless 6 string. Very 'Twang Bar King' kind of material, and that's a plus in my book.

Glooper - DiscoMission

Where are those vocals from? Excellent break at 1:12, I love it.

Mystahr - Summer Breeze

Can't imagine dancing to this one. Intersting hint at a rhythm track starting around 0:50, but it needs more to move my booty.

nikp2000 - the bollywood hillibillies

What a perfect title. I can imagine a full-on indian percussion groove going kicking in at the phrase starting at 0:28, but it's not there. Check out Herdotus' track for the drums that would go well with your track.

scamme - it's all synthetic

Nice production - welcome change-up at 0:48. Head is bobbing - good sign.

Techbot - Ballam-de-nana-haydum-de

The only thing I didn't care for here was the heavily panned/warped acoustic guitar - kind of muddies up the track on my system.

thomekk - lala

Interesting production in an 'Art of Noise' kind of sense - not necessarily danceable to me.

PepeLogu - I fell for KVR

Pepe wins the prize for the earliest entry before a contest starts, June of 2006 in July of 05. I know many people don't care for vocoded stuff, but I like it and it fits in this song.

Tuz - eye.......

Drunkards on speed with brass and stringed instruments is what I imagine here.

Utm - feedback and oscillate

Nice groove - interesting change from 'Athens'

mchlwlsn - seeker

Where's your guitar, man? If I remember right, you did the Jongleur song last month. You could have put in some drop D chunky chords here and they would have fit perfectly.

Freezstar - So Danco Samba

Can't decide what to make of this. There is a certain cheese-factor to it, but I kind of like it.

ixox - Un tout dernier tango

Another tango, hmm. Violins fairly convincing. The cello in the left channel isn't however, and it makes me listen harder to the violins. Minus points for fade-out.

Herodotus - Frogs don't dance

Might make a nice mash-up with nikp2000's entry.

Jaidy - zisorzat

Drums distracting - too mono - need some space to them.

Beardedone - spinnerfall

another lead-fest from the man with the beard, but not necessarily danceable - even with the lovely description of the inspiriation for the song. I'd love to watch you sequence this stuff.

Scarabaeus - The Return of Fonk'n'stein

See if you can change the title of your song so it complies with contest rules - PM pHz for permission. The GM horns and bass really turn me off, but nice guitar work.

rsmus7 - Poddies Dance

The elimination of the bloopy brass/bass at 0:35 was a welcome relief to me, but dang, there it is again at 1:14

Ugo - Bonfire

Ugo, you might actually turn me into a listener of this kind of stuff. I expected a big dynamic change at 1:10 with that cool synth rise that went on a few measures before that. It came at 1:28 instead. Cool intro - would have made a nice break in the middle somewhere.

Aida Cin - forrage

I really was hoping to hear more of that singer from June's entry. This track doesn't seem to go anywhere for me until about 1:35, then it kind of stops.

vurt - dancecontest:dance or die it's your choice

Ask pHz if you can rename your song so it will not be DQ'ed. Creepy, by the way. Not shaking my booty, sorry.

Respirator - Waltz

Mmm, now this I like. The totally clean guitars bereft of reverb are very refreshing. I would have liked to hear a shuffled waltz drum track in there. Ending is uninspired.

Khepira - Ikt Hut Eit

Nice 90's brass keys there in the right channel. They work here.

GregJazz - All I want to do is dance

Kool & the Greg present one of the grooviest bass lines ever heard on KVR, in two forms, popped and unpopped.

pheeleep - Make Music For Fun

The bass theme got a little old for me; the break at 1:50 would have been nice about 30-40 seconds earlier.

Wilkoryte - Slowdance

This song would have been a winner for me if it didn't have doggoned General Midi drums, bass and organ. Nice bluesy playing on the axe.

astanine - halothane

I just don't groove to this, but well done regardless.

Aldred - Twinkletoes

Aptly named. I'd love to hear compositions like this played by a live orchestra. Do you ever get a chance to have this happen?

AndreasE - Dance of the Animals

Are you really Bernie Krause? Very entertaining.

Knockman - Harimogura

Another attention grabber by knockman, and yes, I can imagine dancing to it.

bitcrusher - my first GURU

Left foot tapping on the 8ths, right on 1 and 3; yep qualifies as danceable, but why so short?

Ja.x - Toast Yourself

pm pHz to see if he will let you change the name of your track so you are not DQ'ed. Not my cup of tea with the inharmonic competing melodies.

Katanaman - Dance with Moi

Now that's got some funk. Ride cymbals out of place at 0:48-0:57.

Shuzhen - Epic Shapes Elapse

Me likes - especially the fades of the verbs on some of the keys to the right. Very nice production. Oops, not even a fade at the end? Major disappointment and severe demerit.

Hovmod - Last Farewell Tango

Maybe we should have a tango theme month? Enough entries here to have one. Nice take on it, Hovmod. My only criticism, the piano kind of falls on itself in a couple of places like at 0:28, 0:43, 1:33. Otherwise, one of the more memorable tracks so far.

Farlukar - Batium

Keep waiting for things to get a little more cleaned up, but not happening. The lead a little less dirty would have been a welcome change.

scuzzphut - screamer

Not my style, but I can appreciate the production skills necessary. Oops, crummy fade out at the end.

Damstraversaz - Final pepe au bal

Don't know what to make of this, but I kind of like it.

TristezaOrange-BipolarBear

If it weren't for that snare, this one would have made it more favorable to me - but the snare is going to make me go to the next track before the 2 minutes are done - sorry - oh wait, a break from it at 1:20, oops there it is again, next please.

Mully - Ubelong2me

Mully also enters the KVR song contest 11 months early, with a short song, but it works.

Armadillo - Panther

Reminds me of the same style as scuzzphut's but with a better KVR contest ending.

liqih - Tip Tap Stomp

Which month and year was this for? Cheeky weird but likeable. 1 second too long however.

Richie B - Dance to this

groovy guitar work Richie B. Real or sampled? I might just vote for you.

Wopelka - The Cave Hall electro Menuet

This one might have made it farther up my list if the melody fit better with the backing instrumentation.

JamesB - Mooshoo

Weak drums hurt this track as do the GM guitar or clav sound. Otherwise, the organs have a nice groove. Fadeout suspicious

LadyJ - Jump and Wind

Fade in and out? I'd like to have heard more of the vocals - where it first got interesting for me, but what is that processing on them that makes them sound warbly? I'd like to hear them more clean.

Well that's all of the songs that the glooper program downloaded for me. I hope there aren't too many more entries, this takes a very long time!

i'm reviewing the following entries yo :P

lady j-jump and wind-excellent song. very professional. although, i must say it doesn't categorize as dance music in my head. maybe drive wicked fast music.

jamesb-mooshoo-noone said you have to dance like crazy. :D. excellent composition. slow dance with a chick. grab her ass slowly. :P

wopelka-the cave hall electro menuet-i friggin love this!! you're twisted man. i love the gated violin bits. adds a bit of naughtiness to the piece. i don't know how the hell i would dance to this myself. but i can sure imagine others dancing. i would probably look like a contortionist myself, if i tried to.

richiebee-dancetothis-hehe. excellent. funky. i don't wanna dance though. i wanna watch the girls dance. :P (what the hell is wrong with me?)

liqih-tip tap stomp-i love the twisted samba beginning. i'd definitely do the robot to add some visual fun to it.

armadillo-panther-i'd defitely love to hear this very loud at a dark club with the only light being in the cages that the dancing girls are in. i'll be f**k up, having a blast.

multree-ubelong2me-very cool sounding. chill dance. talent screaming!!! for some reason, i want this to be in the next fifa videogame soundtrack.

tristeza orange-bipolar bear-very creative composition. now it's gonna get stuck in my head :x . kinda silly, although i can kinda see how it's danceable to. maybe semi-robot.

damstraversaz-pepe va au bal-i'm not able to open this file. :(

scuzzphut-screamer-oh yeah baby!!! excellent.... excellent!! :D now i'm deaf from listening it so loud. :x

farlukar-batium-dude!!! i'm turkish man!!! what the f**k???? i swear to god i just got goosebumps. i definitely know how to dance to this. hehe. this is mine forever. :D

hovmod-last farewell tango-beautiful. absolutely beautiful. so pure. i don't know how to dance to tango but i'm willing to learn :) . maybe you could develop this into something bigger. add a bit of bandoneon or something maybe?

shuzhen-whoa!!! funky. do i hear castanets? sounds so full and alive. excellent mix. although i don't know if i could dance to this.

katanaman-dance with moi-i don't know man. you got me all excited with prodigy/chemical brothers, i just started playing the tune without reading the rest of the post. the tune is great, i have nothing against it but i don't think it's really danceable to. just my personal opinion, no offense. as far as abstract funky glitch hop goes. this is it. :)

patrick9-konversation-dead link?

kaos axiom-dude i can't find the link.

ja.x-toast yourself-you're bad influence!!! you bastard!!! :P i shall get toasted in your honor. very f**k up dance tune. i like it. :D. i can see why this is danceable definitely. after getting toasted i'll be too tired to dance, but i'll rock or bob my head or something. :D

ok... i really did get toasted. heheh.

rockstar_not-dance song serial number 1-i'm liking this a lot right now. first toast after the song. :P kidding aside, i liked this a lot. i definitely felt something trying to get out me. tickled my brain with that solo. i like that thank god for guitars sig. can't play for shit myself. had a cool crackly white painted charvel. i had this dude modify it and shit. i got short and stubby fingers not suitable for anything but fast gypsy solos. :P i like this a lot.

bitcrusher-myfirstguru-top quality man!!! excellent dance tune.

knockman-harimogura-cool!!! you're in tokyo. sweet!!! i love this tune man!!! you're one twisted mofo!!! :hail: :hail: not much to say but perfect. a video clip to this would definetely involve a graceful geisha dancing with silver stag beetle earrings at a bar while you sing this live with a band.

andrease-dance of the animals- i can't dance to this. but i know who can!!! :P you definitely put a smile on my face.

aldred-twinkle toes-holy shit man!!! i give up!!! i'm putting an end to my hobby as a crappy musician. awesome work.

Post

Markleford, rioazul: Very enjoyable. The contrast between the latin-ish stuff and the distorted guitar first and last and slapped bass in between I’m not so sure about – but without them I would probably call this cheesy. So good effort! And danceable.

Softegg, passage: I like this. Some at least. The elements are kind off set in stone throughout. Not much development or air. But they work beautifully. Not so danceable, but some.

Thomekk, lalala: Another fine track. The guitar is a bit crude and the voice is discretely unsettling. Up-to-date rock (nice to hear instead of the out-of-date stuff that seems to flourish here). Not so danceable, but ok.

Tuz, Eyenipplevoidoid: Madness, which is fun. I wouldn’t dance to this, but then I don’t do drugs. Very entertaining piece. Some production issues perhaps, but who cares. This got attitude.

PepeLogu, Kvr: Nicely done, but to my strange ears not so exciting.

Kaze, Jinro and other spirits: 3/4 elegance. Love the ambience this creates. Very well done!

Col.G., MC Loser: He, funky. Muppet show meets James Brown. Good fun. Even cowbells.

Warbug, Doa: Not exactly my genre. But this seems well done, good production. I could see people dance to this. Musical.

Glooper, Disco Mission: This track accomplishes sounding pretty contemporary and very commercial and at the same time reaches back to earlier times. Top production. Not my kind off music, but danceable and impeccable.

Scamme, It’s all synthetic: It is indeed. Not my cup of tea. I have a nightmarish vision of someone dancing to this at my high school in the late 80’s. In pastels and horrible hairdos.

Mystahr, Summersbreeze: Hm. Sounds are good. Mood is nice. But I feel something’s missing. The sound from about 1:07 helps. Perhaps a solid percussion element to make this rather funky and catchy track danceable. But top piece as always.

Techbot, Ballam de nana Heydum De: Party track! Love it. Great fun. I dance even though I’m sitting well-behaved at my office. It looses some momentum as the start of the track is absolutely outstanding.

Nikp2000, the Bollywood Hillbillies: I appreciate the concept and it’s almost there. It misses somehow the final touch that could make this truly great, but a favourite so far.

Joence: No dl.

MattG: No dl.

Barnadine, Man Of Grace: You could fill in the space of the great Peter Skellern, easily. You just need a big orchestra. You’ve got it! Top piece. Not so much dance, perhaps. But who cares. The theatrical qualities of this is almost too good to be wasted on a KvR monthly.

Andy., Summer on The Sea: Sea samples and a nice if somewhat bland track. Very summer-ish.

Kovacs, What I Want To Do: The intro-guitar reminds me of some major hit. Arrgggh. Can’t remember. Never mind. This is quite good. The vocal could be produces differently and melted better with the backing. But it shows definite potential. Like it.

You, Feedback and Oscillate: The title promised some sort of sonic experimenting and there is some. But it melds nicely into a more main stream track that is very toe-tapping. Enjoyed it mucho!

Mchlwlsn, Seeker: Hm. Good production. Doesn’t grab me.

Freeztar, So Danco Samba: Very aggressive production (ear buds). Edgy and piercing. Doesn’t suite the track I think. The track it self is well done, but doesn’t really move me (literally as well as metaphorically).

Ixox, Un Tout Dernier Tango: Some of the sampled strings almost work, despite my dislike of such. The track is not as coherent as some of you best works, but it keeps me interested throughout. Even if I don’t understand a word. Could see some French people dance to this. The fade out is cheap.

Herodotus, Frog don’t dance: Interlude-ish (?!?). Or suspense-keeping. Anyway. Like it a lot. Very fragile and listenable.

Jaidy, Zisorzat: This is sort of a mess to me. Some early technopop elements and a lot of other stuff. Incoherent. But with some good elements.

Beardedone, Spinner Fall: Now if you could play this live and get a great band you could be a serious contender to mr. Mercy, Mercy, Mercy himself. You just need the funny hat. Another leap forward for the jazz Meastro of KvR. Good, good stuff.

Scarabaues, The return of Fonk’n’stein: Some funk elements, but I’m not convinced. Good style exercise.

Rsmus7, Poddies Dance: What are poddies? (… google, google, google …) ah! Nice track. Not jumping at you with originality, but some very good elements and fine overall coherence and production. Good luck with getting on them pods.

Ugo, Bonfire: A good track that somehow fails to move me (or I fail to be moved by it). No apparent flaws though. Good stuff.

Aieda_cin, Forrage: I have really enjoyed some of your vocal stuff in the past. This is very good also, but not as… As Ugo’s track it’s without flaws and really well produced.

Vurt, Dance Or Die It’s your choice: Mr. Vurt, you’re a most welcome addition to these contests. This is great. Some could even dance to this, I bet. I don’t care if this is “accidental” or “improvised” or done very quickly (or slowly for that matter). I like it.

Respirator: Hmm.

Khepira, Ikt Hut Eit: I like the attitude. The rest need some grit and less synthesizer shine IMO. But well done track, good economy. Good production. Danceable.

GregJazz, All I want to do is Dance: Obvious pastiche. I used to like this kind of music (+15 years ago). This is very well done (and then some). But honestly. Not in 2005. Or is it just me?

Pheleep, Make Music For Fun: Amen to that. And good piece too!

Wilkoryte, Slowdance: When you want to do something cheesy then do it with a vengeance! Yeah. Perfect slow dance tune. The lovers are so into one another that they need some non-intrusive easy listening. Nailed that without a flaw. Nice, contained guitar playing.

Astanine, Halothane: Bling, bling, bling, bling, bling, bling, bling. BLING! You could probably dance to this, but to much bling.

Aldred, Twinkle Toes: Riverdance?! I didn’t get that either. Is this an ironic tune? If it is, thumbs up. If not, sorry! (Nice production, though).

AndreasE, Dance of the Animals: I’ve not been too kind to your entries in the past, I think. Let me remedy that: This is awesome. I’m still laughing. And at the same time I have strange farm images on my mind (don’t ask). Cool!

Knockman, Harimogura: Well the soft spoken Knockman sounds like a scary ninja or something in his native tongue. Intriguing, would like to hear you sing more in Japanese. Not so sure about the sampled brass. But otherwise top, top piece as always. Dance? Nah.

Bitcrusher, My First Guru: Some nice synth-work. Seem a bit anonymous to me. Sorry.

Rockstar_not, Dance song Serial no. 1: Grooves nicely. Would have been a good backing to some vocal. As an instrumental it’s a bit lacking. But very well put together.

Ja.x, Toast Yourself: Strange: This’ fascinating. Very off in a good way. I like this. It’s weird.

Patrick9, Konversation: Massive. It’s almost overwhelming. But it’s very well done. Not my style, but nevertheless.

Katanaman, Dance: I tapped my foot. Though I’m not sure, where you want to go with this. A bit anonymous for an instrumental track.

Shuhzen, Epic Shapes Elapse: Again a very well done piece, that doesn’t move me. Flawless production, good sounds and elements. Even got a groove going. Though the dancing I see for myself when listening to this is very frantic.

Hovmod, Last Farewell Tango: This is a more Norwegian than Argentinean Tango. Very sad, but with a Nordic lightness. I’m not so fond of sampled instrument – this would have been great with real musicians, perhaps you could interest Jan Garbarek? I like it. Good composition, nice and ligh production (a welcome change in this contest).

Farlukar, Batium: Bum, bum, bum, de-da-da. Nice track. The distortion takes away the risk of cheese. Enjoyable.

Scuzzphut, Screamer: I like this! It got some edge. And a nice groove. Cool track.

Damstraversaz, Final Pépé au Bal: I don’t know what a pépé is, but it sure sounds interesting. Highly original take on the theme. Top piece. Love it.

TristezaOrange, BipolarBear: (I read bipolar beer at first – it’s summer and I’m stuck in an office). Fun track. The disparate elements tells an intriguing story. I’m sure of it, though I don’t quite get the story.

Mully, U Belong 2 Me: Interesting, “silky” production. The guitar in the intro works very well. Very commercial. Good hook. Good details. Top piece.

Armadillo, Panther: Another very well put together track. I like the vocal, very entertaining track. Definitely danceable.

Liqih, Tip Tap Stomp: This goes to prove that you can come along way with very simple tools. Perhaps the best track this month according to the theme. Top piece. Love the economy of this.

Richiebee, Dance To This: Impeccable but dated to my ears. The baritone sax sample is awful. The rest is well done.

Wopelka, The Cave Hall Electro Menuet: Interesting (and good) take on a 3/4 rhythm. The cello sticks out (not in a good way). The rest is reassuringly chaotic.

JamesB, MooShoo: Easy listening from yesteryear. You can do better (obvious talent on display).

Lady J, Jump And Wind: OMG commercial fatigue after 10 secs. Who could possibly dance to this, let alone enjoy it. As always a production that sounds very commercial (professional) in comparison with most stuff in here.

This is to make this post different than the one in the gossip thread. KvR requirements.

Post

Bastien, Nacht: Very well produced. Very contemporary, I like the individual elements and the composition. Something untangeble might be missing, before this would be top of this months comp, though. Haven't got a clue to what that might be, though (so whats the point of even mentioning it?). Cool Track.
