What's the quality difference between convution reverbs?

Hi, currently I'm using SIR and the built in convolution engine within Kontakt2. I'm curious, given the same impulse, is there a quality difference between say SIR, Pristine Space and the Wizoo reverb? I appreciate you may be able to do more tailoring with the pay for verbs, but is the underlying quality of output any different?

There are two differences I can think of:

1. They sound different, even with the same IRs. This is subjective, but important.
2. They vary in the latency (delay) they cause. For example, SIR has a fixed latency of 8960 samples.

And possibly

3. They offer additional features.

WizooVerb has two reverb engines, a convolution reverb (HDIR) and an algorithmic reverb (AIR) that can be combined. Prosoniq´s RayVerb uses inverse raytracing to recreate a room from an impulse response file and offers the possibility to move the sound source within the room, change the material of the walls and even the proportions of the room.

but w2/w5 and the rayverb are really expensive.
a low budget and latency solution which also provides flexibility is voxengo pritine space light + impluse modeler.

there was a test done over at noisevault do a search

Define "really expensive". I've seen RayVerb for $109 which seems pretty reasonable to me.

if it's 109 then it's reasonable, of course. but at the kvr-site it says 299 USD.

They've probably been misled by the conflicting info on Prosoniq's website. On the product page it does say $/€299 but in the webshop the price is €154.31(?)

Edit: I should add that the $109 price is from www.instrumentpro.com/C-Prosoniq

Have any experienced convoverb users got an opinion on Convo Boy?

This months 'Future music' magazine lined up Altiverb5 , space designer & Waves IR-1 v2 and let them fight it out.

IR-1's achilles heel is its price its just too high , yet it did get placed slightly ahead of 'space designer' when it came to sound quality.

Altiverb5 took first place due to its features, its flexibility and sheer beauty of sound.

OK then why is the quality difference?
In time domain, with no filters involved, surely two impulses must sound the same in two different reverbs. Is it because of FFT/inverse FFT is involved?

Post

I think its more of a "'tis different" kind of thing. They all sound slightly different, even with the same impulses. Don't you think it has more to do with the coding?

No, I can multiply 3 by 2 in any number of ways, and still get the result 6. And so is convolution, you just do multiplication and addition. How can the result be different?

I'm not into programming, but I know for sure it is NOT that simple. Eqs should sound the same, but they most definitely do not. Very few VSTi sound the same with very similar features and filters, very few compressors sound the same etc etc etc. And very few h/w units sound the same, yet they are all nowadays 0s and 1s and have been for quite a long time. Coding isn't just about numbers. It's about what it does with those numbers. There are an infinite number of means to one end.

Why don't you try some convos out and report what you find. You may be right. I use several, and to me they sound different... slightly, but different. There are differences in latency. I wouldn't use the convo in Soundforge in real time, but I would use Pristine Space lite or SIR any time. And I like and use them all... well, pristine space lite is probably my favorite.
