actually if you look at the file the middle is showing signs that there is less there, but that doesn't mean it's the mp3...this is a terrible example to use. in the 1st 1/4 it seems too me that there is a bit more soundclashing and competing for headroom, but there's more going there then in the middle. Then the final signal goes back to busy, but less clarity and defination...however the whole thing is quick the ears do not have enough time to purge if you will and adapt to the changes...so anyone taking this test is purely guessing, myself included...but I say wav, wav, mp3, mp3.

or I have it backwards, but visually I see similarities between the first two quarters and I also see similarities between the 3 and 4th quarters as well...
edit: I also notice that in the first half at several points the wav either turns flat on the floor or the ceiling...where as the second half the waves maintain their ingregity through out....so infact I think I did get it backwards...I amend my guess to mp3, mp3, wav, wav

The wav file offered, or rather the contained material, is pretty much useless. An example that doesn't have the crap compressed out of itself would be in order, also it'd help if the material had high frequency content. The example tune you used hardly does. That said, my guess is mp3 - wav - mp3 - wav. Usually I'd go for high frequency degradation when listening for the difference but since theres hardly any high frequency material in this tune to begin with, I'm guesstimating based on other things.

mp3 can be rather nasty on the highs. I listen to a quite a bit of flamenco music which has clapping and shoe tapping. I find when I compress it to VBR or 320 the claps sound really nasty - a horrible kind of echo/metallic reverb follows them.
Apparently the best test is the sound of rain falling. It is random and covers a wide range of the spectrum.

I have a feeling he already got his answer so he's done...or should I say I think he got the answer he wanted...Jonny X wrote:Is we gona get an answer or do we all just go dancing on the moon?
