soulkraka wrote:It seems that almost every decade of the 20th century featured a new musical form of expression, largely invented by black people in the US. Blues, Jazz, RnB, Rock, Funk, Hip-Hop, House, Techno.

House and Techno came out in the early and mid 80's. Whats been happening since then? TBH, Im not familiar enough with drum n bass to say, but, some of the early "big names" of that genre were blacks. Goldie, LTJ etc but I also remember a lot of whites involved in that scene as well.

My point is that there seems to be a bit of a lull. Where is that fresh shit that is so crazy sounding that it will take years for it to become mainstream?
Where is the new music that will strike a chord with so many people that it will become a movement, a'la hip-hop or house?

Pardon the expression but is there an "innocence lost" kind of thing happening here? (and I mean with musicians in general) After all, the business side/commercialization of music seems to be far more dominant than it ever was. This is bound to take its toll on creativity and innovation.

I would love to hear the opinions of TVD, stale bread, munchkin etc on this.

Are you referring to my original post?
well, no, but to the following "look at the beastie boys and eminem" comments, as i said, i was not entirely sure if you just wanted to start a flamewar or if this was a serious thread.

i think you were quite serious now, and some replies here are rather stupid, bones mix of trance and industrial is SO influenced by black music that i had to laugh when in read his comment :D

of course i do not agree with all of your postings, your "all we know about rythm comes from black people" comment is hilarious, but ultimately not true.

black music is usually more "direct emotion", while white music is kind of more intellectual, whites THINK more about the musc they make and perform what THEY think could work, while black music is more "just do it"

the fact that i like a lot of "white interpretations of black music" may be the mix of both worlds, "just do it" mixed with "but wait a minute, let's add a little of this" simply works best for me.

Check it out, all modern music comes from Scotland. No really...
I saw a program years ago about a musicologist call Serge Hovay who was researching Scottish folk songs. He worked with an amazing singer called Jean Redpath. She sang this old, old song called Tam Glen and I swear it was rock 'n roll.

All spellings very approximate.

i seriously had no idea there was so much racism here at KVR. Some of the shit people here have said is simply astonishing.

Soulkraka did you seriously not see this coming?

yea, blacks have ALWAYS ruled music from the beginning (classical is bs btw). if no one's gonna sign me with my white ass innovations, i wish the blacks would do something diff fer christ's sake. i'm tired of the current shit. is there a black in the house?

Like I said earlier, if you even so much as mention the words black and white in the same paragraph then you can expect at least a mild flame war.
BUT
the decent conversation, with the added bonus of being able to laugh at bones, makes it worth it :D

who cares anyway? its the internet...you could "hello" and someone would probably get offended.

I am not stealing anything. And it aint what you you think. How can it be stealing if it is part of one's own culture?

I'm here to learn more about production things so i can have a greater flexibility of skills for my songwriting. i am, on no high horse but the fact is big in America = big in the world. The people I'm working with know this and support my efforts to bring this sound out. So calm down. For someone who has been to the land of smiles you sure are wearing the frown.

Post

Just out of interest LJ (since I forgot to ask in the relevant thread), you mentioned the other day you were going to be producing a girl you predict will blow up in America. Would that be Lady Sov?
