I've heard a lot of BS in my day, but this just blew me away. Who does an analysis on the intelligence of song writing. That sounds like some Nazi BS... It all comes down to numbers. Who sells the most records? It seems to me like people of all colors love that "just do it" music. Intellectual Music...
well, check the music theory threads that spread all over kvr these days ;)
And there I was, just the other day, thinking that I needed to make music that sounded good. :dog:
well, read my posting, did i say that white are better or anything?
no, i just said they have a different approach.

and it's not only music theory, think about your typical "what is the best 303 emulation" threads, i guess most of the threadstarters are white, cause they THINK that they need EXACTLY that sound, instead of creating some acidlines with what they have already ;)

Sad but true. I dont like it anymore than any one else but it is the current state of things. The Americanization of the world radio and stuff is not in my opinion a good thing but it makes for one stop shopping when distributing music.

heh true, esp for production.. but apart from rock stuff and craig david not a lot of UK or non-US artists in general have had their break in the states

Craig who?

Just kidding, but he has disappeared over here. And yes you are right, it works one way. Seldom does a song from abroad make it on the charts here even though that used to be very common in the past. It is just homogenization, mass marketing and californication of american entertainment. What i dont understand is why people in other countries don't band together to offer an alternative to Hollywood, Madison Ave, etc. The US is only 300 million people.

Wait until China and India get really rolling. I've seen some remarkable things from there but sadly most is aimed at a domestic audience (more with China than with India). And of course J-Pop is J-pop. as is K-Pop.

The future is east.

some indian rhythms go really well with dancehall without sounding forced

Yeah you know why that is right?
nah.. why do you think that is?
Because back during slavery times, years ago many Indians were involved in the Carribean so the brought some of their musical heritage no doubt.

see: http://www.sscnet.ucla.edu/southasia/Di ... freed.html
Over the period 1834, when the first batch of indentured Indians arrived in Mauritius, to 1917, when the indentured system was brought to a halt, nearly 1.5 million Indians had sold themselves into debt-bondage. About 240,000 Indians had been sent to British Guiana (now Guyana), 36,000 to Jamaica, and nearly 144,000 to Trinidad, to mention only some of the Caribbean nations. As the Barbadian novelist George Lamming put it, "these Indian hands -- whether in British Guiana or Trinidad -- have fed all of us." These hands were to contribute, as much as the hands of African slaves and their descendants, to the Caribbean experiment of giving shape to a unique expression of human civilisation, and as Lamming has recognized, "there can be no creative discovery of this civilisation without the central and informing influence of the Indian presence. There can be no history of Trinidad and Guyana that is not also a history of the humanisation of those landscapes by Indian labour."

I really find the whole 'black' music thing quite offensive. They dont have 'white' music awards to often do they? Ever good artist takes music somewhere new, and to call it 'black' like its some kind of proprietary thing is just wrong.

Plus the fact, was jazz not just a progression of late romantic music? Hundreds of years of Western music developments seems to have been 'claimed' and labelled 'black' music simply because that particular branch.

Dont get me wrong, Im not saying that the old jazz and blues guys didnt contribute a bundle. Ofcourse they did, and without that contribution these styles would not exsist. But no matter what, jazz and blues are firmly rooted in European music.

Sorry for the rant, this is probably nothing to do with the topic! Just flicks my bean a little cuz everytime I turn on the radio Im hearing black music this, black music that. Its just f**king music, nobody owns it. It doesnt belong to a certain race!!!

It comes off as if "you" think all black music is not intelligent. When I do a song, I don't just throw a bunch of sounds together and say I'm done. Your comments are very biased and unsupported.

Hey, listen I know Im covering controversial ground with this. But surely you must agree that in todays world its a little weak to claim a musical genre belongs to a certain race?

Credit the amazing talents who make the developments, not their race or religion.

Edison owns my lightbulbs.

I don't see anybody here claiming ownership of anything. How is acknowledging the influence/invention of a group of people claiming ownership?

Also, I suspect it wasn't black people who coined the phrase "black music".

You're correct. It was originally labelled "Race Music" in america by white record labels. Later on it became Rock n Roll, Rhythm and Blues, etc etc...
