Is it still that cool kinda jumpy r&b / housey hybrid?
Or has it faded out of the limelight?

If it sounds good it is good.

I think it kind of died, after turning into the aural equivalent of a chihuahua being violently sodomized by an elephant made of shit.

It kinda died for 2 reasons:
1. It was very simple and formulaic and didn't evolve, so punters got bored.
2. The whole 'gangsta' culture that surrounded it meant that club owners wouldn't risk hosting garage nights, if they hadn't been closed down already.
It still has an underground following though and www.u-d-m.co.uk sell a lot of new vinyl (if you're interested).
In The Midlands and The North (in the UK), however, we've seen a resurgence of Speed Garage. But the following tends to be coked-up nob-heads playing mostly mash-ups and badly produced shite pitched up to +8.
