Sounds like you're on the right track. Another culprit for some Sonar users is autosave - when Sonar attempts to autosave while a session is playing or recording, many people have hiccups. If you can remember to save yourself, uncheck autosave.

Also, check for the patch on July 26 - we're basically getting a new audio engine with (reportedly) very little gapping.
Sounds good, though by then I think I'll no longer be online :(

isn't it more accurate to say that your musical 'career' is riddled with showstopping bugs ?
Um, at least I HAVE a musical career.
I thought you sold that? :P

That's a recipe for disaster for any DAW setup. If you don't have an extra PC for the net and the other stuff I would strongly suggest you get a copy of Partition Magic and create a dual boot OS,one solely for DAW(no internet) and the other for your other stuff, and don't install the OS's in a shared directory but rather in seperate patitions.

It's been crashing really hard and taking out my sound card for 10 minutes every time, and I've been losing changes made to my tunes despite almost manic saving after each project change. I can't close Sonar in the task manager either.

It seems I get a crash every 20 mins to half an hour!

However, it's not usually this bad. I usually run a reinstall of bindows and all my software every 2 months or so as I also use my puter for t'internet and other work stuff, so a lot of crap and demo versions of various software gets installed etc etc.

After a fresh install everything runs sweet as cherries for a while, but as time passes it seems I get more and more Sonar crashes. It's now at the point where it's almost impossible to sit down and have a flowing session with Sonar, as I spend so much time waiting for crashes to resolve etc.

Does anyone else experinece this on multi-purpose (non-DAW specific) systems?

I guess it's time for another reinstall of bindows  , what a great way to spend a weekend.

I'm tempted to jump ship to Cubase but don't want to lose the tracks I have in Sonar, and just don't have the time to learn a new host. I've used Nuendo for a few days and it was tight like a tiger, so I'm thinking Cubase will have the same solidity.

Pffft. :x

man, you are really insane doing all this work with reinstalling your complete system every two months. I also download demos every day, i install them and deinstall them, I would call myself a heavy user. but my system is quite stable after 2,5 years of use (of course, I am careful in what I am doing). However, if I would experience the same problems I would go for Go Back. I have it and it works great. you can make system backups (but not like a image but more dynamic, so just a frew gigs are needed). anytime, as the name says, you can go back to a stable condition. it works like a charme.

I've been using SONAR for years and have not had any serious issues with crashing. I think you should clean your registry as suggested and also looking to other aspects of your setup.

The only consistent crashing I have ever experiencd was with 3.0, and a driver update for my video card fixed that. And then there were a few instances where I tried to use cracked/warez plug-ins, which made my system unstable as Sybil, so I swore to never use a crack again.

I don't agree with the assesment of the Cakewalk VST adapter. I have 100s of VSTs loaded with no issues.

If you like SONAR, as much as you say you do, you owe it to yourself to work these issues out. You could spend the bread on another ap, only to find out that your system was the culprit all along.

I'm afraid that there are too many happy SONAR users out there (or any major host for that matter) to make the statement that it is bug-ridden to the point of unusability.
I'm glad the c major scale was invented before copyright law

As I said before I don't use (or even particularly like) Sonar... but I must say that I wholeheartedly agree with everything maoinhibitor says there.

As I said before, clean your registry out, and follow the other recommendations given here. I do not believe that the problem is with Sonar
