Silly question.. but how do you get better at an instrument once you reach and level and can't seem to surpass it?

go off on a new tangent...
The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.

you can either work through the plateau or put it down for a while and work on another instrument. Then come back to it. After that your perspective should be a little different.

Depends on if you mean your chops or your ideas.
For new ideas on an instrument, put it down and leave it for a month to work on another instrument. When you return to it, you'll approach it from a slightly different, fresh angle.
Might even bust you out of some ruts with your chops, too.
Otherwise, somtimes it's not your playing that is the issue, it's your ears!

Just accept the fact that creativity comes in waves, sometimes it takes longer for the next wave to roll in. Other than that, try learning others' music. that will help yer chops when you figure out how someone else does something.

that's why I like alternate tunings on the guitar...if I get in a funk I try a tuning I've never used before...it's like a new instrument, but I already know how to play it...

Like they've said, try a different approach. If for instance you're playing guitar, start working on techniques you haven't before like finger-picking instead of using a plectrum, or alternate tunings. Or try learning common techniques for different styles of playing, like if you're a rock guitarist, figure out what jazz guys are doing.

Guitar was what I had in mind. I dunno, I just find myself tinkering and not actually doing a lot of recording. Y'know what I mean? Like... I'll come up with a riff or whatever... but then it'll go nowhere.

I once strangled myself with a guitar string and after that I didn't make any mistakes anymore - ever!
On top of that, I died with a hard-on

damn I'm really sorry to hear that, to think how long you waited and you finally get your first wood and don't live to enjoy it...that's rough..cptgone wrote:I once strangled myself with a guitar string and after that I didn't make any mistakes anymore - ever!
