hi,

i am into music making for many, many years,
and "if" into sampling, then by using wav one-shots.

having all different synths,
i never came up with the idea using SF2 at all.

so, my first real touch with SF2 was
by using Paax2 and KongAudio the flute-thingy.

so, after having first touch with SF2,
i was quiet amazed!

so, in the past i never understood the purpose
of using SF2.

so, i came up with the clue:
SF2 is usefull, if one searches for that
one specific sound that a synth can`t offer,
so, you have one SF2 file to play a piano,
or flute.. for quick work flow etc.

and the purpose of SF2 seems to be,
that one can play real nice sounding files,
that sound like real synths,
but don`t use very much CPU power at all.

so, this must be the reason, right?
and akai files are the same thing?!

btw. does anyone know a place,
for free "abstract" sf2/akai sounds?

maybe things like:
nature-sounds,
train, rain, wind, bugs, animals, birds,
screams, general instruments,
and all kinds of bamboo+wood-instruments etc. ???
or could be anything..else too..
just need to try some more...

thx !

Hmmm... not sure, but maybe Awave or Extreme Sample Convertor can convert Virgin to SF2.

JK :)

Try sf2midi.com or hammersound.net for soundfonts, look for "effects."

@Greggjazz,

okay *bling* i get the point of it ;-)

you talking about,
making your own SF2 files,
instead of searching for existing ones.

that`s also a great idea, indeed!

makes things even more flexible,
and there wouldn`t be any license issues, either.
since, i built my own SF2.

i consider doing that instead,
since i already got the wav`s i need for the job.

THX for the hint

p.s.

but what i wanted to say is:

that "i am a virgin when it comes to using SF2"
not that i wanted to transfer
raw material (virgin) into SF2

ok, i used them with a SB-live years ago (1998),
but that was too big of a hassle.
now being able to use them with VSTI`s is much, much better!

Yeah, well actually, when I saw the thread title "Virgin to SF2", I thought "woah, never heard of that sample format." :)

Bambooman,

Below is your magical pathway to more than 10 pages of links to (mostly) free soundfonts. Enjoy!

Does anyone know where to get the "SAM Trumpet Section" mentioned in that thread? In 2002 it was released for free (along with a timpani set, but I have Fluid, Cadenza and NS so I don't need that); however, the link that was posted back then is dead.

Regarding Maestro, IIRC only two-thirds of the clarinet was released on sf2midi, and nothing else (except the piano at the Auditorium). If Spe3d or miles or anyone in the know is reading this... well, it would be nice...

Apparently no one had anything to say...?

I missed the GPO group buy, and the regular price is a little steep for me (engineering student). I'm just trying to do as well as I can below the $300 orchestra set floor.

I have the entire clarinet soundfonts... see what Spe3d says, and maybe we can put it up on Audioshots. In the readme it says to freely distribute it, just leave the files intact and unmodified.

that would be fantastic- the Maestro clarinet at sf2.midi is great - really expressive velocity layering

Bambooman - recommend that you register at http://www.sf2midi.com - good searchable collection of sf2s and they don't spam you.

Go for it :) - upload it to the auditorium and if you have probs - let me know and I will provide you with an ftp to upload by. :)

Best regards,

Spe3d
