Seriously, I don't know if it can get any cheesier than those two "classic" instruments. Every time I hear them in a song, I just want to roll my eyes... So cheesy I could vomit.

The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.

Dunno... The Rhodes suitcase piano can (not always) sound pretty etherial if mixed properly...
Listen to Zero-7 - In the Waiting Line (from the Garden State soundtrack)... The little Rhodes-Solo (with a whole lot of spacey reverb) gives me chills every time I hear it. Cracking goog stuff!

And you find this surprising?
And speaking of cheese, the shmankytone of the 'jazz' guitar is another cringer for me. Electromagnetic pickups invented in the mid 20th century were very primitive, muffled lo-fi, but that cheesy tone became the 'standard' sound for generations. Ugh!
And more profoundly disturbing, talented people all over the world are devoting themselves to recreating those 'classic' instruments in ones and zeroes. And other talented people, er, wankers are using these virtual 'classics' to somehow validate their 'modern' compositions. Pfff! Humans. What a bunch of tradition-mongers.

...and I thought a Rhodes73 was more real than a electric piano sound of a Yamaha DX7!the_nihilist wrote:Seriously, I don't know if it can get any cheesier than those two "classic" instruments. Every time I hear them in a song, I just want to roll my eyes... So cheesy I could vomit.
Lionel Ritchie had his cheesey moments with a DX7!

Puh...leeeze.
Truly this bloke needed no help from a DX7 to be cheesy.

Don't get me started on the mellotron and DX7 e-piano... I bought the boxed M-Tron for the sale price of $50, and I haven't found a single use for it that doesn't sound immensely cheesy... I guess you can use a rotary speaker simulator for that sort of Amon Tobin chaos theory vibe, but it was hardly the "increadible steal" the sales dude said it was.
And as for the DX7 e-piano... it just sounds like ass. I mean, sure... if you want to do Phil Collins covers, go right ahead, but god damn -- if you're using this, you have bad taste!

Even a Roland D-50 & Korg M1 were used to create cheese.

Seeing as how a Rhodes and a B3 go into every single song that I produce I'm not entirely sure how to take this thread. While we're at..Moogs are cheesy, so are Korgs, and Oberhiems, and anythine Roland makes, and any digital synth, and any other analogue synth. Hell, drums are cheesy, so are stringed instruments. You knwo what else? Every time i hear the human voice on top of any of these cheesy instruments it makes the human voice cheesy too. You know, nature is pretty cheesy too. I mean, it's everywhere! Give it a rest nature! I'm getting tired of gravity rearing it's ugly head all the time too.
