This is like an AA meeting!

Live 5 - My main squeeze for composition. I use in conjunction with P5V2 (Dimension is fantastic) and Reason 2.5(beats and synth lines)

Sonar 4 - Mostly finsh the tunes off in Sonar (although I am going to try staying in Live 5 completely for the next tune). I also like Sonar's OMF export feature, as sometimes I get stuff remixed by a Protools guy who can accept this format easily.

P5V2 - as above

Reason 2.5 - as above

Tracktion 2 - used for composition before buying Live 4. Still pull her out of the hanger occasionally

eXT - Got this (very cheap) as I love watching a great developer working, and enjoy the thrill as new betas get released almost daily.

FLStudio 5 - havent used for ages. Long standing bug in when using as a VSTi in Tracktion frustrated me.

That was very cathartic!

Cheers
Jed

Hey Hink,
I'm afraid we have a similar setup, though we're doing different kinds of muzak. :o I'm still resisting Ableton, but how long.. :?:
No, really I'm satisfied with FL and Audition :)

My perfect match would be a combination between the ones that I've used and loved.

I've been making Basic Channel type dub-tech mostly and some more experiemtnal stuff. I also make whatever someone else wants if I do film or commercial.

Buzz (becaue it simple to use and very deep. My favorite part is the modular mixer. No one not even XT can top it. The next two featureas are a tie, Best vst host REALLY, and best tracker for drum sequencing. Low CPU on sound makers. Great automation implementation. Everything is free and super portable. Draw backs: not enough visual feed back or mouse control, you have to be ready to settle for only tracking, not stable enough. Developement pretty static.)

Energy XT (becaue it has most of the things I wish buzz had and Jorgen is the man. Draw backs: work flow isn't there yet, it feels like a handicapped super hero)

Live (my new contender because it is easy to use, work flow is great, ultra powerful, nice to look at, flexible. I've only used the beta but I think I'm in love. Drawbacks: the drawbacks are my own, I NEED a way to visualize my effects in a xt/buzz like web, the cpu is a bit intense compared to others IMO. I could get used to it if I start to integrate it w/ XT) I'll have to meet the live comunity before I decide to go gu-ho

FL (because it has the best qick sample sequencer around, good stuff comes with it, came be loaded as a vst, it's a pretty nice package all around. Draw backs: The GUI makes me sick [that and devine machine are the only two softwares I can't use just because of the GUI], once again not sold on the linear mixer, or the implementation of patterns or the audio tracks) Don't own just played with a lot.

Tracktion 2 (because it has the best audio tracks around, ok modular racks, nice to look at, Video!, good community. Drawbacks: never got too much music out it of other than some kick ass mix cd's and some film work. Don't know perhaps too linear for me, no chance of patterns and midi was just not satisfing) Still my goto for working with LARGE audio clips! Replaced my longing for Vegas.

Played with Reason too and thought that it was a lot of fun because it was so modular and had great sounding peices. I didn't like that it didn't have vst support or audio tracks, and had to be integrated via rewire. I still suggest itto my friends who want to start out and can afford it.

I was but I got better.

Sonar -> Cubase -> Logic -> Live 5 -> Happiness.

Live5 - My favorite host that gives me most of what I want in one app. I don't feel a constant longing for any features with Live5.

Traktion 2 - I really like the idea of Tracktion more than the reality of it - I feel like It's always missing something. But composing midi in the timeline in relation to audio tracks keeps it useful to me, not to mention using it for it's built-in mastering plug and 64 bit mixing.

Reason 3 - the closest thing to hardware I have beyond my CS1x. I have a huge library of sounds for it and it works incredibly well with Live so it's always useful.

Logic Express 7 - Got it for nearly nothing and like lots about it, but since it's MAc only it will never be my primary DAW. I'm keeping it around to use for video.

CM Musys - I open it occasionally just to check out why people still love it so much, but I never used it enough to 'get' it.

I used to check out every peice of software that came along, but now I'm of the opinion that less is more, so I'm trying to just stay in Live5 for most stuff, use Reason as an instrument bank, with little side forrays into Tracktion. Since the Live update I don't see much point in looking to other DAWs for a long time, so I guess my whoring days are through :D

I got Cakewalk 7 or something bundled with something else in '98 or thereabouts. I was still completely entrenched in hardware at the time, looking to get a Trinity to replace my aging O1R/W, and it had no appeal to me whatsoever beyond playing downloaded MIDI files to see if they could be used to make cover versions.
I had started using Cool Edit '95 to do all my sample editing and eventually decided to look more seriously at software. After seeking advice from several others I bought CubaseVST 3.7 and despite several arduous sessions over a couple of months I found it the death of creativity and continued using my Trinity to do all my sequencing. Luckily I was able to get my money back for Cubase from the store.
Sik introduced mt ro Fruityloops 1.7 and we both found it infinitely more creative than either of the big sequencers we had used and I bought a licence straight away. 18 months later I still hadn't successfully ported any of our songs to it nor had I finished even a single new one. Despite the fun it really wasn't very good for actually getting things done.
So then we discovered ORION, coincidentally also at v1.7, and took to it like a duck to water. In 6 months I had all of our songs ported and ready to go live with and had finished half-a-dozen new ones, mostly from ideas we had started in Fruity. Better still was the fact that it all sounded so much better than it ever had before. Finally I was confident enough to put the Trinity up for sale [although it took me three years to finally get rid of it for around 20% of what I had paid for it].
With ORION Platinum we have produced two albums, mastering the latest one in ORION too, played in support of some of the biggest names in our genre and flown half-way around the world to perform. I can realize any musical idea that pops into my head and get lost ofr hours just playing around with ideas. I never feel restricted in the slightest, nor is there anything substantial that is lacking, certainly nothing that keeps me from getting better and better at what I do. Sure, I own EnergyXT but in reality playing around with it just confirms my choice to use ORION PLatinum for the sheer quality of results that I can achieve, almost without effort. I am no longer even curious about other hosts.

FL Studio

where i can freely express myself, as long as it doesn't involve recording, often used as a DXi in Sonar.

Sonar

for Midi Audio Recording and editing, and control of Reason when used.

Reason 2.5

rarely used.

EnergyXT

very cool, but demands time and a great deal of "tweaker" spirit

Muzys - my favourite of the sequencers but dead I'm afraid

EnergyXT - the host I currently use

FLStudio - used this for a while but never successfully completed a song in it. Was a pretty cool device though

Orion Platinum - I bought to original 1.x of Orion and didn't really like it. For some reason I kept upgrading to Pro and then to Platinum. Still didn't like it - but got a nice box out of it

n-Track Studio - I liked this for working with audio but absolutely hated it for getting anything done with midi
Special edition of Logic Silver - long time ago - came with a soundcard. Despised it more than tinea.

Traktion 1 Free - got in on this one to check it out more thoroughly and hated it just as much now that it was free as when I downloaded the demo. Don't think I'd like T2 either.

- Had an old version of Cubase VST 3.7(?). It was OK - but....not for me.

Only Muzys and EnergyXT are currently installed on my computer and only EnergyXT is currently being used. Although I'm one of those people who have owned alot of hosts, I'm not one of those people who like using different hosts for different parts/specialities. I only really like working in one environment if I can help it.

I really wish I could copy/paste midi between hosts. Like if the clipboard would support midi as a format, remembering all the associated data, and be able to paste it. That would make using multiple hosts for multiple strengths more usable.

Damn, I don't know why but Live5 seems easier somehow to work with the midi editor and view audio tracks in the timeline to place notes next to beats, and that coupled with other finer points of Live over T (not having to toggle between note insertion and velocity settings in T) just made me lose the need to do any midi editing in Traktion. All that's left for T to do now is mastering, and I can probably make a device chain in Live that will do about the same thing. I recently got Audition as well so maybe I should use that for mastering instead. I may be really close to one DAW now (if you don't consider Reason a DAW). Life just got simpler!

Yeah, of course. What was I thinking. We need an OS made specifically for music.

Hey.. I gots a question..

Why is it that I see EnergyXT in everyone's list? What's so awesome about eXT?

I think I tried it once.. but I suppose didn't give it much patience.. prolly cause it looks pretty incapable of doing anything good..

anyway.. thx :)

Cubase SX (primary)--soon to upgrade to SX3.1
Tracktion NFR (a dalliance and some of my students use it)
Fl Studio 5 (patterning)
Acid Pro 4 (looping)
Plogue Bidule (sound design and MIDI triggers)
Chainer (standalone and sound design)

plus

Reason 3 (ReWire)
MIDI Yoke ==> Sibelius

And I'd like Live!

A whore get gets paid--I pay them, which makes me a slut.
