Wow, Live 5 has just been released.

Post

Whoo!

I've just downloaded my free upgrade - I'm all excited now :hihi:

Guess what I'm doing this weekend? :D

Live seems very appealing, I am nearly sold on it.

However, how is Live with big projects, (many vsti, effects, tracks, large samples).

What I mean is will Live be slow and sluggish or can Live hold its own.

as long as your CPU is beefy enough it should be ... i dont use vast numbers of tracks usually but i DO (heehee) pile on the effects and live copes admirably ...

After having problems using the late betas on my music computer, I have just tried the 5.01 demo and it crashes before it even reaches the scanning for vst's stage, so I guess I won't be getting converted any time soon...

I'd try renaming the vst folder anyway and restart Live.
That way you can be sure it's no rogue plug-in.

delete your whole live 5.0.1 preferences folder and try again. there's been lots of problems with 5.0.1 adapting its preferences from earlier versions and f**king everything up by doing so. mine worked fine without anything like that but apparently trashing the whole prefs dir once helps.

if it keeps on crashing after that, you have a vst plugin live doesn't like.

i've found that live isn't generally as efficient as some of the other hosts out there (logic, cubase, etc.)... but the newest version isn't totally awful either. i'd suggest trying out the demo, it can give you a pretty good impression on how things work.
never stop loving music.

The thing is that it doesn't even get to start scanning the plugins, it crashes before it even reaches that. I don't even get the Live splash screen, it just crashes with a runtime error...

I tried out the demo xylyx, and am very pleased with it.

I noticed negligible differences of performance between SX and Live, (ok it wasnt a very thorough test, I just wanted to see if a standard project for me in SX would be comparable for CPU usage in Live, I like effects to, lol)

My only major concern is the activation. I upgrade constantly (both CPU and MOBO). Are there others in a similar situation and how did Ableton respond?

I think you only need a serial number for the program; it's not linked to your hardware stuff.
good thing, imo

In addition to keying in your serial number (which you also need in order to download bugfix updates), you need to get an "Unlock Key". Assuming your computer is online, this is done automatically and only takes seconds. If your music PC is not online, you can do it offline from another computer or over the phone. There is a 10-day period for doing this.

It still says on their site that you get two activations. To get more you need to send them a brief note with a convincing explanation.

That concerns me, because even though I image my disks, I reformat once or twice a year to keep performance at its peak. And, like MySTiK, I am often upgrading or swapping components in my DAW. My two activations could be gone in a relatively short time.

So, to echo that same concern, does anyone have any experience in getting additional activations from the folks at Ableton?

Thanks.

Bill

did you try the "delete the preferences dir" trick? one other person i know of had the exact same problem that was solved by removing the live prefs dir completely and then starting the app so it rebuilds the prefs from scratch.

This may shed some light:

An excerpt from a user post in the Ableton Forum: (Poster is "zekrab")
If you wish to format your HD, first save in a safe place the "Unlock" folder you'll find in Documents&settings/your name/Application Data/Ableton/Live5/ and then drag it back after reinstalling Live. This way you won't need to reauthorize Live again.
