There is no Preferences directory to delete. I guess it doesn't even get to that stage before crashing. *shrug* Never had anything like this when demoing the previous versions (or the beta I tried).zion15 wrote:
did you try the "delete the preferences dir" trick? one other person i know of had the exact same problem that was solved by removing the live prefs dir completely and then starting the app so it rebuilds the prefs from scratch.

Live 5 =
I'm totally hyped up about 5. Freakin awesome fun. I started making digital music on a mc303 and a yamaha su700, added some hardware synths. Live 5 is so cool, it puts me back to tweaking on the fly greatness, plus when I want to get to the down and dirty of DAW work, I now have all the cool options. I use to think FL was intuitive for making music, but the way live works, makes more sense to me. I still love FL and tracktion, but I'm in Live 90% of the time. Amazing improvements. yes, I checked out the demo of Distortion in it. My old athlon 2000+ with a gig of ram hits at 25 - 33% cpu on that song. Still pretty amazing for all the instances of instruments in it. When I upgrade the board, cpu, and RAM, it's gonna be off the hook with the amount of softsynths I'll be able to open. Plus freeze and PDC? How bout all the new cool built in goodies? sweeeeet.

5 seems to be working pretty well, however I encountered 2 problems.
I was working on a project that was already started with a ton of tracks and plugins. I selected "delay compensation". Everything was working fine, but when I close it and reopened, everthing was garbled. I had to untick delay compensation, save and restart the app.
Also, some of the frozen tracks mysteriously disappeared when I reopened and the files were gone. Luckily the unfrozen track was still there.

I assumed that delay compensation should remain permanently selected, unless you choose instead to enter manual delay compensation using the entry point in the mixer strip?Hypertone wrote: I was working on a project that was already started with a ton of tracks and plugins. It's always a good idea to select "Save Set Sefl Contained", and even more so if you use the new freeze functionality. This gives you instant access to frozen clips as rendered audio clips that you can use elsewhere in the project... or even in a different project altogether. It's a tidy solution, and I suspect that the program is less likely to lose clips if they are nicely saved in their own project folder, rather than lingering in the Live temp folder. Also, some of the frozen tracks mysteriously disappeared when I reopened and the files were gone. Luckily the unfrozen track was still there.

I upgraded my Live 4 to Live 5.0.1 and spent a glorious Sunday playing with Live 5 and Operator. No problems with upgrade purchase, serial, unlocking, or registration updates. The installation went smoothly.
I had it running for hours and hours on end, tweaking everything, trying out the new device groups and other goodies, going through the new lessons... Finally I even did a complete track, I was just so inspired.
All I can say is anyone who has not tried Live has not lived.

I know the emphasis on Live is repeating patterns and being able to turn on and off different clips etc. and use a kind of 'sketchbook' approach to composition.
How are people finding Live for more freeform composition, with patterns that are rarely similar lengths etc. and less bound to traditional rhythms? (e.g., Electronic Ambient, Soundscapes, Classical, etc.)?
Downloaded Live 5 demo and about to have play with it.

... although having said that ... you can mix and match patterns of arbitary length in the session view and set the clip start snap to anything you like (or not have it snap at all) ...
... one of the great things about live IS how flexible it is to work with ...

I hear Carter Burwell uses ableton live for some of his film scoring.ceenda wrote:I know the emphasis on Live is repeating patterns and being able to turn on and off different clips etc. and use a kind of 'sketchbook' approach to composition.

I use it as a standard multitrack recorder, about the only loops I use are drumloops. It works great this way. It's very easy to arrange large chunks of audio. Here's something I did in Live.ceenda wrote: How are people finding Live for more freeform composition, with patterns that are rarely similar lengths etc. and less bound to traditional rhythms? listen to the songs posted on the first page of this thread. One of them is quite like an electronic ambient thing. While the emphesis is on patterns you can also record in the arrangement view, which is basically what sold me on it.ceenda wrote:I know the emphasis on Live is repeating patterns and being able to turn on and off different clips etc. and use a kind of 'sketchbook' approach to composition.

I bought it today, too. I know it's just a tool, but this version is truly the breath of fresh air I've been waiting for. It's got most of the functionality of the major big guys, but incredible flexibilty/freedom in a crisp, clean workspace that doesn't get in your way.
I'm sold.
