Beat Detective came to LE in, I think (?), version 6.7. This was a paid upgrade, so your school may not have bitten for it yet.
So check which version they're running. I'm only on 6.4 myself.

I kinda though they were anywaz equiped with HD rigs... Beatdetective is standard on the TDM version.

Edit : If they bought the PT systems in the recent past, in all probability most software upgrades for at least a year would be free.

Post

Yes, I got the upgrade for free because of being recent enough.

Just a few other notes. First, the recent upgrades have been pretty significant, with improvements to MIDI and such, as well as Beat Detective, the new EQIII(great EQ plug), the ability to select your own colors for your tracks(very important to some), and MANY other improvements.

Also, with the M-Audio cards, you may have to get the M-powered version from Digidesign seperately, but I am not sure. They may not be shipping them together yet. Probably soon, though.

PT is so much more powerful than the surface shows. The audio editing is far superior to most, if not all hosts. After going through the Digidesign training certification program, I learned how much was really there. I still use Tracktion as my personal host, but PT is invaluable if you are going to work in the industry at any point. So learn it front and back. And until you get to the full versions, get some books. Go to Barnes and Nobles and sit and read. You will read so much good information.

Good luck!

Don't take this the wrong way, but how long have you got to go from never having used Pro Tools to teaching others how to use it? You've got some woodshedding to do!
Also, I've been a sound editor for 25 years and I still don't know a single professional who uses Pro tools on a pc.

Post

Good point- i don't know many people who use Pro Tools on a PC either- but these users exist; for example, Pro Tools is used extensively in the video game industry- and so are PC's =)

Anyway- if you're familiar with one sequencer, they're all pretty much the same.

Post

Yeah - it may be a regional thing. I'm really only talking about NYC - if you want to work here, you should know PT for Mac.(We've done some video game work at the studio I work at - still on Macs.) Don't get me wrong, I'm more of a pc guy myself, I just had to go with the way the industry went.

The RTAS version of Beat Detective is called Beat Detective LE and for good reason,it's limited to 1 stereo or mono track at a time which means you can't use it on multiple individual drum tracks at once which kind of defeats the purpouse of it.You'll either have to mix down your drums to a single stereo track ahead of time to use it,or record your drums in stereo.Could be usefull for tightening up stereo drum loops though and other percussive instruments, but you'll be denied the real strength and purpous of the plug.I'm starting to think that PTLE users need their own Union to be treated fairly. :D

I double checked with Phil O'Keef(an experienced PTLE user)over at his forum at Music Player http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/ultimate ... 01753.html and his reply was....
You can use BD LE on a single mono track, or a single stereo track... unlike the TDM version, you can not use it on multiple grouped tracks.

PT LE does support stereo tracks.
Kind of confusing though. Why would BT LE support stereo tracks when PTLE doesn't.The world of Digidesign is fraught with contradictions it appears.

A track can still be stereo. It just gives you two mono sides is what he's trying to say. But you can still have stereo tracks. In the end, I haven't seen anything wrong with the way it handles. But it's not a true stereo FILE, just two monos in one TRACK.
