Some Live 5 questions:

1) Can't i record directly in the Session View? Like recording a guitar-lick that is immediately looped? I guess i'm overseeing something here.

2) Can't i switch off the arrangement-thing? Sometimes when working in session view, it suddenly jumps playing the arrangement.

The Session-on-top-of-Arrangement idea is very good but also very confusing to me. But that's maybe because i'm new to Live.

yes you can. the simplest way is to arm the audio track for recording (the record button in the bottom part of the mixer) and press record in one of the empty slots to start recording. after recording the desired length press play to start playing the clip again. that simple.

1. yes; might want to check your routing, but definately yes you can record in session view or arrangement.
2. I have no idea why it would suddenly jump to a different view..
As you say, session/arrangement can be a little confusing, but if you spend time with it you'll certainly get it.

Out of all the hosts out there, I'm mostly interested in Live 5 now. Unfortunately, the beta I was trying I got it too late and it expired two days later.

In that time though, I got really confused. OK, I'm slow, but as a Fruity user (the only host I have ever used since I stopped using trackers) I can't seem to get my head around the workflow.

So, I guess one of my main questions is, are there any Fruity users out there that have made the switch? And if so, how did you find making the change? Easy after a while or a six month learning curve filed with constant painfull mistakes?

xander,

you can toy with the demo version a bit more, it could help. go through the lessons included - even i grasped the concept pretty easily without them, they still helped to clarify a few points and no doubt someone who's a bit confused with live would benefit a lot from going through them.

i've never used fruity properly (otherwise than trying out some little stuff at my friend's place since he used it) so i can't help you otherwise. having used logic, some trackers and other misc pieces of software it was a pretty easy transition.

Ah got it working, nice!

Now let's say i've recorded some guitar phrase and want to automate the delay i've put on it.

So how to record some effect automation into an audio-clip in session view?

Post

think you might want to use envelope clips
not sure if your'e using the demo, or what..but there should be some lessons in the help section..I've been going through them and are worthwhile

Post

just read your post again, and you said effects..so my answer might not mean much (I'm just learning myself)
but you can use clips for panning and volume

Post

yo bluedad, yeah i've read about the clip envelopes, but these must be drawn by hand right? i just want to record some effect parameter changes on the fly (by mouse or midi controller) and link that automation to a clip...

Post

vrishba, to set up MIDI controller mapping, simply:

1) press the MIDI button on the top right hand area of the screen
3) click on the screen the parameter you wish to automate/control (for VSTs and effects, etc, you need to "open out" the parameters using the arrow on the effect's title bar)
3) move sliders/knobs/etc on your MIDI controller to assign them (you will see a numeric value appear in brackets)
4) Press the top right MIDI kbutton again to deactivate mapping

Once you have done that you can record in your automation over the audio/MIDI track by recording in the usual way. Hope this helps.

that doesnt record into the clip though (which i THINK is what hes asking) ... just into the arrangement ...

... not sure it IS possible to record into clip envelopes TBH (if it is im not seeing it at the minute) ... but get yourself a graphics tablet and switch the grid off and drawing clip automation in by hand is almost as quick as recording automation ...

slainte ;) rob

Post

Hmmm... I see what you mean Rob.

Surely this would work if you record the clip automation in at the same time as you record the clip, though perhaps not as an overdub, as you say?

Post

thanks headquest for the midi controller hint (lovely easy!), knew that already as i also give attention to the docs/lessons.

but as rob says: i want to record such parameter changes into a clip, so that it's part of that clip.

would be surprised if that isn't possible; maybe in Live 6?
