i'm sure that as a cat owner you know how neurotic they are

i had a cat that was taken from it's mommy WAAAAAY too soon and had 'weaning issues'

she would 'knead' (that what we always called that pushy pawing thing) on everything, her entire life...pillows, your tummy, a shirt, etc.

it's just a flakey subconscious habit thing that doesn't go away in a lot of cats, i've seen it a lot....i'm certain it's a comfort thing, as it's the exact same move that kittens use on mommy's tummy to cause a milk let-down and get started feeding

Post

by the way, over the last couple years i've learned a couple of moves that cause a milk let-down in my wife....all without touching her

instant entertainment for me everytime....kinda bugs her though

Ever heard of people sucking their thumb? That doesn't work either, eh?
:scared: there's a big difference between my thumb and anything I want sucked...big difference :hihi: "If it's the size of a thumb, likely you'll be getting none"... :P

Best scratching thing for cats: The BACK of a piece of carpet. Much rougher than the front, feels good on their pawpads. Humans don't care for it because it's ugly, but it's not for humans.

Lasts longer this way, too.

Oh, and grow your own catnip. It's nearly impossible to fail once the plants get going, and fresh green 'nip is FAR stronger than that brownish mess they charge big money for in stores. Get a few seeds and a pot of soil that you can put where the cat can't reach it, and you've got catnip for life. (Ours has been growing for about 20 years so far. When one plant gets weak we just collect the seeds and plant again. If I, a terrible gardener, can grow it, then YOU can grow it.)

Yep,definately grow your own catnip. It's so easy. I've been doing it for years now and they love love it. Way more than the stuff you buy at the store. I've never had any problems with my cats in the studio. They've never really broken anything. They are sometimes in the way, especially when you're trying to finish something off and they want attention. One of mine likes to sleep on my midi controler. I try to discourage it, but he always seems to go back. So no real problems so far. Make sure you keep on top of the hair situation though.

2 cats here. One totally ignores me while I'm working on music, the other (MixMasterMalika) can't resist walking all over my mixer, keyboards and worktable, crying her head off 'cause I'm not paying any attention to her. I have to admit . . . there have been times when I've had to chase her out. Not because she's hurting the gear, but it's damned hard to concentrate on a mix when she's trying to jump in your lap and meowing like a whinning little baby.

But "get a dog?" Yeah, whatever. Like that would be eaiser.

Yep my three do it constantly but mostly on my stomach at about 4:30am... kind of to 'announce' that they are here, happy and getting ready to get comfortable :) They were strays whos Mum died when they were very young and were drinking the runoff water from our washing machine they were so hungry - boy have they landed on their feet

Never had troubles gear wise - well apart from hair EVERYWHERE!!!

One isnt interested, one just waits on my bed for me to put on a DVD for him to watch and one sits on my lap all the time, music, net, games, everything - I think he must like the swingy chair :)

Anyone else get the 'paws out now rub my belly' thing where they are all happy and snuggly and suddenly with no warning you get bit???

Cheers,
Dave

*nodnod* You bet. Fortunately, most cats don't pick up on the owners' neuroses.

Thanks all for the helpful (and amusing) comments. Seems like the main thing is to keep an eye on things and be ready to take protective steps if the cat decides anything in the studio is good for chewing/scratching.

I'll probably cover the speakers when I'm out, and maybe I'll do the same with other valuable/vulnerable pieces.

(For the record, I love dogs too -- the family always had one while I was growing up -- but I don't have the time or space for a dog these days...)

One last thing. Tend to the air intakes in all equipment that have fans. It's amazing the amount of hair the fans can suck up, even with a well groomed pet.

congrats on your new pet. I have a blue-eyed stray named Audrey that has taken over the roost here.

she kneads, she knocks stuff over, she sheds fur

but she keeps my dog company and that's cool too.

She only has an interest in my one cable which has a woven outer covering -- she chews on that one occasionally but hasn't shorted it yet.

Luckily, I have a swinging cat doorway into the garage and she spends a lot of time out there hunting down crickets and whatnot. She claws up a cardboard box out there for now, though I know she sometimes claws the bamboo rug. I don't care, it's just a stupid rug.

I'll have to get her some catnip. Hadn't thought of that. I bet she'll get really loopy on it.

Right, that's gone and capped it...I can't read anymore...

My studio cat died of feline lukemia. Bleeding sad it was.

I normally don't take to cats much, but this one was abandoned as a wee blighter and I'm too soft a bloke to simply let nature take it's course, so I took her in and nursed her back. Told myself as soon as she was on her feet again I would find her another place. Yeah, riiiigght.

Anyroad, she stayed. And what a extraordinary cat she was. Nary a vice did she have, and as polite a lass as you could imagine for a feline companion. I have an old leather reading chair in my writing room and she would always crawl up on my lap whilst I read and sipped a bit-o-the-grape, purring away just so.

Bloody rotter of a disease. You don't see it coming and it hits them like Thor's hammer before you can do a thing to help them.

Sad time for kilroy, that. :(

Sorry to hear, mate! :(

One of mine is probably going into treatment for hyperthyroidism soon. :? Luckily it was caught extremely early due to another procedure. Nothing like the lukemia, though: just burns 'em out early...

I love them critters!

Aw, kilroy that's a very sad story about losing your cat.

And Markleford, I hope your cat's treatment goes well.

I have two cats, Gandalf and Pookie. Gandalf hangs out a lot in my studio. He does not bother the cords, but I do have them bundled with that cord rap, kind like plastic pipe with a slit in it. All in all, he is harmless, just wants attention when he wants it.
