as a boy, i was overwhelmed by music. in order to play instruments without losing my mind, i had to desensitize a bit. now, i can play and feel at the same time. however with others' music, i don't alow myself to feel. sometimes i don't have much of a choice. that then becomes the music i listen to

like all art ... if it makes a personal subjective connection with me then yes i FEEL it ... otherwise you just appreciate i guess ...

I try to let the music move me.. some does, some doesn't, as you would expect. I play pretty much what I feel (which is why I have a light-side and dark-side music project, being somewhat bipolar). There are songs that can move me to tears, give me chills.. and others that bore me to sleep!

It's all so bloody subjective...

I must..music soothes me, some angers me and by that I do not mean the lyrics, sometimes songs can amplify my emotions. Agressive music that I listen to ofen can pump me up more when my anxiety rises...now remember anxiety is a major thing with me so I monitor this. Times like that I put on some Floyd, or some blues...and I will admit there is some music that just imo isnt that good, when I hear it I cringe...if I'm mad that can pump me up too.

Meanwhile if I'm in a great mood that same music that raises my ire can be quite euphoric and help sustain the good mood.

So yeah I feel the music, but not always the same way...;)

The "feeling" part of music is, it seems to me, rather more emphasized in most musical cultures than the "thinking" part.

Many seem to believe that the whole 'thinking' element in music is unnecessary if not harmful (hence all of the 'I won't learn theory cos it will destroy my inspiration' posts).

But if you actually do slog your way through some of those theory books, you will find that the writers are often as anti-intellectual as the most populistic rock journalist.

Many of the 'facts' put forth in some very standard works are dubious at best. Based as they are on misunderstandings of writers who were themselves confused. Hell, I have seen the exact same Chopin etude given totally contradictory analyses by none other than the two most 'standard' theory writers: Heinrich Shenker and Walter Piston.....

my music makes me cry...not all of it, but when I do something I'm real proud of, it does often bring tears...;)

i think crying to one's own music is like reaching nirvana. i'm not even close. i usually get mad at it. i cried to others' music though. usually if i'm listening to a traditional turkish song or something. i miss home a lot. haven't been there for a long time... almost 5 years. the family and friends i left back there are getting old. can't see them though. music from the homeland just touches me in a different way i can't really describe. i sometimes sit in front of the computer and play tunes from home with my 2 octave keyboard. i have very limited capabilities but sometimes even that's enough to give me goosebumps.
