OK, I had a closer look at this now... it seems you can record in just a few of the standard basic MIDI controller messages, rather than automation for VST parameters. That's why my mod wheel and pitch bend worked. The filter was assigned on a pedal which seemed to work as pedal automation. But when I tried again it didn't work out as I thought the first time, so I'm not quite sure what's happening there... one to look into further though!

still teaching ???

I never stop working, me!

Basically I teach in schools etc during term time, but give courses, etc, privately during the holidays. For September however a friend and I are setting up a private business teaching "electronic music" - predominantly keyboard teaching, but also piano & organ playing skills, music theory, etc... and some basic computer music stuff (beginner courses in Reason, Live, Sibelius, possibly Cubase, Tracktion, Audio editing)

You can't record VST automation into clips, only into the arrange view. You *can* record MIDI cc data into clips and you can also draw VST automation in, but you can't record it into clips.

I complained about this on the forum and they said it's not going to happen in V5.

Is it possible to ghost midi clips? I tried Ctrl-dragging one but it's a copy, not a ghost clip. I've tried searching in the PDF document, but it doesn't seem to like "ghost" or "instance clip".
No. Live doesn't support linked/aliased/ghost clips, unfortunately. I've been bugging them about this since V4 came out. Hopefull we'll see them in V6.

OK - thanks for straightening that out for us kuniklo 8) Maybe in version 6, then :)

yeah ... no biggie ... like i said i use a pen and tablet to draw in automation almost as quick as i could record it (faster in some cases like fades and panning where i can draw faster than realtime) ...

thanks kuniklo for these clarifications!

Couldn't you just record the clip in the arrangment view and then drop it into the session view?

This doesn't work because the automation data is associated with the track, not the clip, when you record it this way.

Just a thought (I'll maybe try it out!) but is this still true if you padlock the automation to the clip in arrangement view and then save the clip as a Live Clip?

Sounds like it's time for an experiment. Put on your labcoats, gentlemen!

Me too. I´m also confused about that clip envelopes.

You can draw them, but they don´t seem to take effect.

just spent much of the day cleaning out my studio, and this evening brought in the keystation pro 88. It's really been a gas assigning stuff to knobs and sliders and messing about. I don't understand the problem rob and headquest are discussing, I'm not that far along, but man, I love this program!
Now, I need to make space for my motif ES rack.
