i have a nord g2 and it sounds nothing like synth1, not even slightly, not even if i wear ear plugs. i've no idea about disco dsp.
but surely thats not the point, i still use synth1 from time to time. its a great free synth, who cares if it sounds like a nord as long as it works for you.

A discussion involving Synth1 and Discovery would not be complete without mention of Exciton. While not intended as a Nord Lead emulation, it has a similar interface (better actually, with its mod matrix), sound quality near Discovery's level with CPU usage near Synth1's. Overall, a great VST of this style.
And while I too am quite fond of Synth1, its sound quality is audibly less than that of Discovery or Exciton. Thats not necessarily bad; less is fine for many applications -- DnB comes to mind.

Exciton is a great little synth. I haven't used it since I got impOSCar, but I really like the interface.

having never spent time working with a nord, i dont have anything really of substance to add to this thread. however, i thought i'd drop in anyway just to say that, imho, discovery is a cool and usefull VA.
im usually not too concerned about whether or not a vsti sounds like a particular piece of hardware. my main interest is simply whether i like the tone of the vsti. like anything else, some synths grab you and some dont. there are certainly popular synths out there that just dont excite me at all. (some have already been mentioned here.) but, i do happen to dig discovery. your milage may vary.
imho, the synth has good, tight, effective tone, its easy to use, and the layering gives you the ability to create rather large sounds and complext sounds. (and then there's the morphing.)
also, for those that only tried earlier versions and dug the tone but were put off by the high cpu usage...check out the latest version. disco has done a great job at improving effeciency. it uses up considerably less cpu now.

Yeah luv Exciton too. I like it for really wierd sounding pads that have a really "haunting" quality. I like the built in effects aswell and use the reverb quite often as it seems to work well with the type of sound I produce from it. Imposcar is one of the warmest, if not the warmest, sounding VSTi I have heard. From discoDSP, it never was said that Discovery is a Clavia Nordlead 2 emulator. (It would be also illegal). In fact we put clearly this statement in the docs, on import nord2-sysex section.
I own a Nord Lead 2. Imho the NL2 sounds better in every aspect than Discovery, (it seems to work internally at 80kHz wich gives headroom bandwidth to achieve better fm/sync and other effects). We just created an aproximation of it.
But to say that Synth1 sounds closer to nord2 than discoDSP Discovery...
Some trivia: I remember that when measuring data/samples from Nord2, taking oscillator samples, etc, we passed the nl2 synthesizer to laptop input then used soundforge as editor. Played back the sounds on soundforge, all the nord2 character and bright was lost. Of course, the laptop soundcard (we was sampling at 44100) is nowhere near the Nord2 DAC's.
