Voters are influenced?

Just for interest: I wonder if voters of the monthly contests are influenced (i.e. do not vote for a musician´s track even though the voter loves that song) because of the following:
1. the musician gave bad review(s) to the voter´s song(s)
2. the musician did not vote for the voter´s song(s) in the past.
I would say that nothing applies to me. I´m only judging the quality of the actual song.
How about you?

I vote for the tracks I like. However I reserve the right to I refuse to consider entries from people who break the 'spirit' of the contests.

Judging the quality? more or less, i'd rather say: picking the track that i like the most. If a track is very well produced but leaves me cold, without emotion or interest, i won't vote for it.
as for the author, i don't care at all if he's nice with me or not, if he writes good, bad or no reviews at all. Would be quite childish to act like this.

I wouldn't claim to absolute impartiality, but I try to vote purely on whether I like the song and whether it fits the theme. There have been people who have been in my opinion contrary to the 'spirit' of the contest but whom I still voted for because they I felt they were the best picks for the theme.
Maybe I subconsciously will 'positively discriminate' occasionally, if I feel that a track is unpopular because of the stylistic preferences of the voters, but I try not to think too hard about it, just running up a playlist in Winamp quickly so I can get it over and done with

Music with dinner is an insult both to the cook and the violinist.

This is what I mean by "quality".Wopelka wrote:Judging the quality? more or less, i'd rather say: picking the track that i like the most.

That's me as well.whyterabbyt wrote:I vote for the tracks I like. However I reserve the right to I refuse to consider entries from people who break the 'spirit' of the contests.
What I like can be very weird, but these are some of my own internal 'rules' to help me sort through the tens of submissions:
1. Fade-ins/Fade-outs that are obviously done to meet 2 minutes are immediate DQ for my votes - even if I liked the song.
2. If there is somehow a direct reference to the theme or other KVR influence, then that's almost a guarantee that the song was composed for the competition. That gets bonus points in my book. Like last month, where (I wish I could remember who it was) claimed that his song was going to make him famous on KVR like Donkey T or Beardedone. I loved that.
3. 'Humanness' in the track always wins points for me - live instrumentation, singing, etc. (Yes I realize it takes unique skill to do an all-electronic/programmed track, but I've always been a sucker for live performance).
4. Lots of swearing makes it difficult for me to enjoy or endure a track. I avoid this music in the marketplace; don't have to be assaulted by foul language where I work, etc. Hearing lots of swearing just turns me off in a way that is very difficult for me to vote for a track, much in the same way some people loathe 'tarnce' and will never vote for it.
5. Melody: if you have one that I remember days after hearing it (like right now I'm singing Barnadine's "I'm a man of grace" in my head because of it's infectious melody) then that's almost a sure vote from me. I have no recollection whether Barnadine has ever voted for me or given me a positive review, but I won't forget this particular song - or at least the spirit of the song.
6. If the song makes me think "How in the world did he/she do that?" then that helps me vote positively; if it's in the theme. I really use the KVR comps to push new recording/production techniques that I haven't tried before. Listening to the wide variety of stuff that shows up here is great inspiration to try new stuff.
7. Writing reviews: Writing reviews, no matter how unqualified I am to do so, helps me to critically listen to every track for any of these elements and helps to formulate votes. But this is getting too time consuming with so many submissions.
No favorites here - but I do remember if someone had a memorable track in the past and that might make me pay closer attention. But looking back at my votes, I always have new folks on my vote list each month - so I don't think I vote for favorites. There are some people that just seem to shine through on a regular basis (I wish that was me but it isn't

I try to vote on whether I like the song and whether it fits the theme.
I dont think that my votes mean they are the best quality songs just the ones I liked the best at the time I voted.
There are some people who I think do high quality songs but may not get my vote because it is not my taste.

Wopelka, you're safe. You could swear in French the entire length of your track and I wouldn't have a clue if that's what you were doingWopelka wrote:do french words equal swearing in your book?rockstar_not wrote:Lots of swearing makes it difficult for me to enjoy or endure a track.

My votes are just made on whether or not it fit the theme in a way that I liked.
If I like the music of one entry better than another, but the other one fits the theme better, I'll probably go for the one I like more.
I think content and production really are too intertwined to exemplify this (i.e. both contribute alot to an entry being musical or not), but if one entry has the content and lacks the production, I'll vote for it over one that has production but lacks content.
Not voting for someone because their entry seems to have been cut down for the contest, like mine did this time (because it was made with a tracker, i.e. programmed patterns), without seeing if there was a legitimate reason for it, isn't really a good call either IMHO.

despite the result of this poll people are highly influenced by antipathies/sympathies even if they don't realize it - heck I could even statistically prove that...

Go on then. Prove it statistically.
