Does anyone here know of a vst/dxi limiter that can tame peaks without flattening them out (I think that's what a brickwall does). A limiter that can raise the quite parts while lowering the loud parts - yet without clipping the peaks off. Thanx..

Yes. It's called knowing how a compressor works. I suggest you learn yourself some knowledge.

EDIT: relatively high threshold, soft knee, medium to high compression ratio... work from there..

'learn yourself some knowledge'
im stealing that phrase now

BuzMaxi...

Yeah, they're coded right. It's amazing how the GPP1 limites without clipping (where as other limiters i've tested always hard brickwalled the transient even in soft mode. GPP1, even in brickwall mode gave the peaks a soft clipping. The plug really gave balance to the material. So i'm thinking of buying it. However, i'm still testing out a few others.

GPP-1 is quite good.
Also try Voxengo Elephant and PSP VintageWarmer.
GPP-1, Elephant and VW are my favourites.

Tls Pocket Limiter - has an adjustable knee from brickwall down to 100% soft...and very clear it is too. It's my go-to limiter.

Must admit I haven't tried the Kjaerhus one - I use GUP1 and it's a beaut too, but never saw the point of buying a limiter considering BuzMaxi and Pocket Limiter are so incredibly good.

And Artdude - what host do you use? Just that Cubase SX has at least 2 soft limiters included. (Although they aren't as clear as Buz and Tls, in fact, the one included as part of the multiband comp is horribly muffled...but the soft clip has a bit of character)

yeah, you got me to thinking, i tried out all 3 side by side on the same clip and they (with identical settings) sounded the same to me except BuzzMaxi clipped off the peaks which isn't good. But the
BuzzComps sounded real nice though.
GPP1 is $68.00, yet you almost CAN'T make it clip off your steap peaks, especially if it's in OPTO mode. BuzzMaxi clipped them pretty bad. Pocket Limiter was good at not cutting off peaks. I guess i'll go with Pocket Limiter since it "clip friendly" and is free :).

Oh, i use Sonar 4.

I use GPP1 on just about everything. I never understood people gushing over compression until I bought this one. Brilliant.

yeah i think i'm gonna go buy it right now :)

TL maximizer uses read ahead and shapes the peaks instead of just cutting them off. It's freeware and quite good.

Also a good compressor set up propperly should be able to do it, though without read ahead it maight not be as good.

But the problem with that is that there are almost no s/w comps with zero attack - they usually stop at 0.5mS or even 1mS. Which is no good for a master render, as some peaks will clip through the attack :( .

Post

Not a problem. Just put a limiter with zero treshold after the compressor. The signal will be above 0dB before the limiter, but internally this is not a problem; there's enough headroom for it.

Gheorge yhong's w-1 limiter/ skinned by betabugs (on their site), is a very transparent limiter to tame peaks with. It is reputed to sound as good as the Waves stuff, though I wouldn't know.
