UAD1 or Poco versus second PC

Having heard both the UAD1 and the Poco cards, and though the included plugins are pretty nice (but not as nice as some of my old hardware), what makes this a better solution then networking a second PC? It seems that a very powerful pc can be purchased at the same price as either of these cards and provide a lot more bang for the buck. Am I missing something?

That is some of it. With UAD it is not just the fact that it alleviates some of the load from the PC - as you could use a second PC to do that, it is because you are getting very high quality plugs that are not available as native plugs. Why exactly, isn't the purpose of these cards to reduce CPU loads while running effects?

Aye...when you look closely at the price, those cards make alot of sense. For example, a decent Eq - you'd probably have to look at something like URS to get the equivalent quality in native Eq on a 2nd PC - check the prices of those, plus you need an Ilok (which means PACE etc
).
Where can you get an EMT plate reverb native? To me the only comparable reverb (even though it's rooms and not plates) is the Princeton one - again, check out the price, and you need PACE etc.
Some very good dynamics plugins on UAD too. You can buy maybe equivalent plugins natively, but they all cost - none of the freebies match up yet.
So it's not just the DSP power that is the draw. In fact, nowadays, it's probably mopre the quality of the plugins that attracts people.

I have 2 UAD-1 (butter!), 1 TC Poco firewire (ice!), 2 Creamware SCOPE (hart!) and a second PC linked via FX teleport (VSTi and brain!).
I can't live without one of this =)

Have you ever heard of render to audio? It's a great new gimmick that came out recently...

erminardi, that's a nice setup.
I agree with kritikon, it's more to it than DSP power with these DSP cards. I can only speak about UAD, cause that's all I have. If you only buy one UAD card, get ready to render alot or buy another card...

It's very easy to max out one card. Two cards is perfect. Whatever plugs you have are automatically registered for up to four cards, so you only need the Project Pack for additional cards.

It is the faithful emulations of vintage hardware and the professional quality of the intense DSP algorithms that sell the UAD-1, although the native CPU savings is certainly a welcome bonus. With one card you can normally get 7-12 of the most DSP intensive plugins going before maxing out. With track freeze, available in most DAW's these days, that is probably good enough, for a lot of users. I bought a 2nd card so I would not have to track freeze my UAD-1 plugins. I can now get anywhere from 14-25 plugins, in realtime, which is usually more than enough, for my projects.kritikon wrote: So it's not just the DSP power that is the draw. 1 UAD wasn't enough for me , 2 UAD's i find is just fine.
just to note UAD-1's and powercore's do complement each other.
I also own a Powercore firewire but i must admit nowadays its not very often i switch the powercore on i much prefer to use the UAD only , the Plate 140 made my powercore redundant.
One of the reasons i bought the powercore was for the virus/powercore but its full of bugs the update that came out the other week was useless too.
If you ever have a choice between them both i'd go UAD everytime.

Yeah, but the price of owning a studio and project pak, is more than a second pc...Lady J wrote: why? why buy another?
And if money isn't of importance, well than that opens up a whole can of worms...
