I'm thinking it's some sort of pied piper set, or maybe a celtic set. At any rate, I saw the words "group buy".

How could we forget the man who wrote
'your sperm's in the gutter, your love's in the sink'
('Thick as a brick)
Ian Anderson..pied piper..pan flute...
is it a flute collection?
Do we need to stand on one leg to play it?

i think squids likes to start these guessing games so he can find out what our most inner desires are. so in the process of releasing a library he gets a concept for a new one!timfarman wrote: Ian Anderson..pied piper..pan flute...

I think there's a gap in the market for a good celtic set (thinking jigs and reels - fiddle, bazouki, mandolin, bhodran, banjo, guitar, harmonium, accordian, ulian pipes etc rather than the synthpadwashoverreverbednoconsonantsinmysinging Enya kind of rubbish).harmony gardens wrote:I'm thinking it's some sort of pied piper set, or maybe a celtic set. I must confess I've never been able to watch Braveheart beyond the bit early on where someone dies and you get the skirl of the lone synth player instead of a piper!
Regards,
Derek.

Agreed - big, big samples with lots of velocity layers, qualaity rather than quantity when it comes to acoustic samples -in time for the folk revival (bound to happen)-I'll even dig out my Incredible String band record for a lark

Did I ever mention that I actually have a Hohner Claviola? I must have. It's an awesome instrument. Too bad it was absurdly expensive but then I am lucky to have been able to buy it one year at NAMM. Did I ever tell you guys my Hohner NAMM story? It's kind of funny. This is many years ago (maybe before SR... I still went to NAMM every year since 1989). Every year I would take some time to hunt for odd instruments from around the world that I could buy at wholesale prices (NAMM to me was one big storeMeffy wrote:If it's a sampled Hohner Claviola responsive to breath controller input, maybe I can practice and some day join One Ring Zero as an auxiliary... *dreams*
Okay, so for a while I was curious to know if there was perhaps a melodica that could do vibrato. So, I always had to ask someone who was never around who would know. Then one time that person was almost available as soon as they were done talking to some people and he knew that I was waiting to talk to him. Then he says to me "Okay, thanks for waiting. How can I help you?" so I go into my whole thing "Well, I was wondering if you have a kind of melodica that..." and then he interrupts me and says "oh man... I'm sorry. Turn around." and right behind me is Stevie Wonder coming our way. At that point I gave up (at least for that NAMM) and didn't even say anything to the guys but "I understand. Later!" I mean, for Hohner (or anyone really) it is a major ordeal to have Stevie drop by. [and it was for us years later when he came by the IK booth to jam with me on Imap drums in ST for those that remember... you know I have video footage if anyone wants to see that]
I think I DID tell this story but surely its new to some and perhaps I will tell more Squidstories including even ones that I've told because we do have a new crowd compared to 2-3 years ago and anyone who is STILL around from that time probably has some interest or knows when to skip it.
To wrap it up (and make it relevant sort of) the next year I went back to Hohner and finally got to ask my question. Interestingly enough they had an answer and it was the Claviola. They had one with them and it was new. They didn't know if they were going to make many as it was very expensive (10X the price of a Melodica). I bought that one from the show for half price. I've never seen them have one at the show since. Talk about rare! You could do vibrato by covering the holes like a harmonica but it has this pipe organ/harp coming off the keys. Pretty wild. It sounds like a cross between a woodwind instrument and a melodica/harmonica. Rich low notes though.
Anyway, after all of that, I am sad to report that although I have sampled it heavily and it WILL end up on something at some point... it's not on this secret SR product!

It's not a celtic collection. I do have many of those instruments sampled though. I personally own a Celtic Harp that is beautiful in the living room.
Uellian pipes are a great sound (I particularly like the way Sting used them).
Okay, I will give you another hint. It has a Wurlitzer on it and also some percussion. But, I guarantee I just threw you off!

Good story.
I'd almost certainly go for a (future) Claviola sample set, particularly if it had some One Ring Zero-style mutes and bends. ORZ totally own the Claviola.
ORZ have some pretty good stories to tell too... they're from near here. Hohner's North America warehouse and repair facility was, and I think still is, about a half hour's drive north of where I live. That's where ORZ got started. And it's all thanks to the Claviola that it happened.
Odd note: The Claviola is unusual in that its normal mode is overblowing. Its reeds are mounted on the "wrong side" of the reedplate, not on the opposite side from the airflow as in other free-reed instruments. They're also easily adjusted, so you can do slightly "off" tunings without too much effort. (Those organ-looking resonating tubes add a lot of volume and a rich timbre but limit how far afield you can go with tuning.)
Yes, I do rather like unusual instruments. :-)
P.S.: Keep that Claviola. They're very rare due to their high list price and almost complete lack of promotion, and the ones still in existence are most likely all there will ever be. If you must get rid of it, you should give it away as a premium to the eSoundz customer with the most purchases and longest, fluffiest tail. =o.O=
