Call me silly but I would probably do something original instead of being a hack and copying somebody elses work.TechNoiZ wrote:So would you take the chance .... if you knew that your version would be more widely heard than the original and undoubtably make more money ... [considering it would sound vastly superior in production values and, of course, more up to date?]

It sounds like a killer mash-up opportunity!

JohnVulich - been having a bad day? JESUS!
BTW sublime isnt pop or disposable corperate crap
to the original poster: If you are worried about it, you could just make it more simular and label it as a remix. Wouldn't be the first time for artists to do so.
Just be sure not to pull a vanilla ice. NO one likes him anymore.

oh yea and i dont think they are too simular. Even if so, the oasis guys are pretty cool and they would be MOST LIKELY flattered to inspire other heard-of artists.

No, actually I'm having a particularly good day. I suppose this is me just being "spirited" because I feel so good.Chase wrote:JohnVulich - been having a bad day? JESUS!

To each his own. I think Sublime is crap. Not my cup of tea. Then again you would probably hate the ambient/ethnic/industrial music that i like such as Alio Die, Vidna Obmana and Oophoi. Taste isn't really debatable. However one thing is a fact, Sublime is indeed a corporate product... like it or not. And since they are on the radio all the time, I do believe that they qualify as pop. Sorry to burst your bubble but the corporate establishment has appropriated the whole "alternative" genre which, quite frankly, isn't really alternative at all.

I thought it was the other way around. I thought that he was implying that Oasis ripped-off the other band.Chase wrote:oh yea and i dont think they are too simular. Even if so, the oasis guys are pretty cool and they would be MOST LIKELY flattered to inspire other heard-of artists.

there's no such thing as a new melody in 2005.
not under 8 bars anyway.
with millions of musicians(multiplied by 50+ years) , each of everyone writing approx 100 songs.....u are bound to get identical melodies all the time.
every song i hear i can reconnect to another....and more time passes and more music i listen the worse it gets.....i hardly ever hear a melody which i haven't heard before.
as a muscian these days u should concentrate more on the "sound " and "feel " of your music....cos if u think u're inventing new melodiues u're just illuding yourself.

_starcraft_ : the melody is in fact 16 bars long, the fact that it doesn't change very much is part of the melodies structure - because it doesn't use many notes does not make the melody (as a whole; as a 4-phrase structure) any shorter. You are right of course given that in those 16 bars the melody could have done anything it is surprising that what it did do was, to be sure, identical to another melody - and also rhymed the same syllables at the same points along the way (line 2 > line4, in both verses rhyming on the same syllables)
Also, the feel of the verse is very similar, very un-Oasis like in many ways ...... JohnVulich was not being dim when he didn't recognise it as an Oasis tune - it is not representative of their usual sound or style.
Funnily enough - I did write the first one - and have now resurected the main idea for the song but recorded it, as I do most things nowadays, using guitars. It sounds like an Oasis ripp-off
I don't really want to be accused of nicking one of Oasis' tunes when in fact it is mine
. It would make an intersting court case .....
btw .. I'm surprised nobody recognises the sound of the good old SQ80 in the first recording .... recorded and released in 1990 ...

I don't think Noel would be too worried mate. We don't see paul mcarsole getting upset at Oasis.

Reckon you're right there
I'm just skint at the moment and could do with some money
..... My publisher should have got on the case years ago when it came out. It seems that today it is a lot more acceptable to nick large chunks of somebody elses songs and use them as your own than it was a few years ago ..... Perhaps I'll make it sound soooooo much like Oasis that their publisher will get on my case .... then I can let somebody else expensive lawyer prove that I must've ripped them off before I produce my original and use their own arguments against them ......
