it was just a listener note, nothing relevant to the discussion, i admit.

but i answered to your point before and after that line.

that's the point I personlly don't like about the themes in general - everything can and will be interpreted in so many different ways to adapt it the the own current personal needs.. (and I mean for both actions: submitting and voting) so that it all tends to become one big unfunny farce...

For the same reason this current discussion sadly is totally useless...

oh, and one thing I'd like to add:

Wopelka's track was one of the first tracks for this month I listened to and I thought- hey, that's an original idea to interpret the theme in such an unorthodox way so I liked it very much already for this fact alone - but then I heard some more tracks... - I should have known KVR better than that... :?

Probably...

"music to dance to" must then mean "music which it is somehow possible to actually dance to if one tries hard enough" (and even classical and ambient can then be included if it just has the slightest form of rhythm integrated somehow) and not "music which instantly makes you want to dance".
These themes should definitely be better defined then. :?

Yeah, I can see where you're coming from, Armadillo. I was surprised myself by the lack of traditional 4-to-the-floor thumpers in this month's line-up. Would have been interesting to read more reviews by unashamed dance fans too.

While it's always great when people enjoy your stuff, I wasn't really expecting votes this month. In fact, I scratch my head any month I get votes. If it's just a votes issue, I'm more than happy to DQ myself if it stops a bit of bad will festering and keeps the comps fun. No worries. That stuff doesn't really fuss me. 8)

Themed months are good for hearing all the creative ways people react to a single idea. The down side is, it can get a bit angsty come vote time.

For a bit of context: I'd just been working on a project that was all about beats, so for this month's entry I wanted to try out a dance that was more about the flow than the punctuation. But I like both sides of the coin, wasn't trying to make any huge statement. Lots of way to dance, and they're all good.

But sure, I can understand it'd be a bit annoying for a dance music aficionado, seeing all these weird foofy approaches to the theme, in a month specifically about dance music. If I was a grizzled old bluesman, and someone came to my club for a blues competition and played something that didn't have anything to do with what I defined as the blues, I'd probably be asking questions. Then I'd drink a bottle of whiskey, pick up my guitar and feel lonesome. Damn, I wish I was a grizzled old bluesman. :(

at one point early on, these competitions were fun..then it got to the point of genre nit picking (i.e. 'That's NOT dub')
now it's even traveled out of the cafe setting up polls etc.
:(

i appreciate your detachment with regard to the voting part of the competition (i share this detachment), but i wouldn't appreciate if you DQ yourself, for it would mean that voting stuff has become so controversial that, as bluedad just said, all the fun and spirit of the KvR contests have disappeared. if it's so, i'm considering to quit. :(

Nah, no need to do that. I just picked out your song. I'm sure I could find others, which I'd define "hardly danceable" but still got good votes. You just happened to be the most succesful one. :D

Dance music eh.....so I'm not the only one who might have misinterpreted "music to dance to".

Not with a name like Barnadine. You need preferably three names:

The first is some kind of infirmity (like blindness, deafness or lameness), a phenomenon of nature, a cut of meat, or a well-known US car manufacturer.

The optional second name can either be a fruit, vegetable, southern American state or short familiar first name.

And last a family name of an American founding father.

Unfortunately "Barnadine" meets none of those criteria so it would have to go. But after that, the grizzling part should be pretty straightforward: lose your job, your wife, your house, your worldly possestions except the guitar and/or harmonica, take up constant hard drinking, hoboing and then make a deal with the devil to get it all back plus interest.

... the august theme arguement will be a doozy i reckon ...

Only one way to fix it, bluedad. Return to the contests immediately. :hyper:

I was getting sick of 'Barnadine' anyway. Say hello to 'Deep-Vein-Thrombosis "Potato" Whipple (Jr)'

I definitely agree with your sentiments, Teach. I think half the fun is subvurting the theme, or seeing it from different angles. Maybe if there were no prizes, people wouldn't get as stressed and we could talk warm, friendly smack again :)

I think these comps. are a great part of the community here :)
