i am quite pleased with the convolution based reverb. my only wish would be for this to be less cpu hungry.

By the time you've bought a few of the expensive software reverbs, you may as well buy a Lexicon hardware unit. Convolution can't really capture what they do - but it gives a taste.

What do you mean by 'one big reverb'?

I found that everytime I put the 960L on whatever signal, I just got that one hollywood show reverb. This is quiet fantastic - for hollywood-like productions... in other words, it sound very american (in the musical meaning), and at the same time a little bit oldschool to my ears.
There was no way to get another sound, different from this, out of it.
So, if you like this sound, the 960L is the top end of what you can get. If you don't like, better leave it and look for other good reverbs (like TC or else).

I just set up a mic and speaker inside an old 55 gallon drum.

What do you mean by 'one big reverb'?

Probably means it in the way that Princeton offers "one small reverb".

I think it gets ignored a lot but Freeverb (and any variations) is a very smooth and lush plate type reverb. It's a bit of a "one trick pony" and doesn't have a lot of parameters but I still find myself reaching for it, all the time, when I need a lush reverb for ambient works. I have yet to find anything else that sounds just as smooth to my ears.

Another good freebie that I haven't seen mentioned is X-Verb. It's actually a really good hall, except if you can clearly hear the tail, (which is obviously the make-or-break test of a great hall 'verb). I tried x-verb for pipe organ and was pretty impressed.
