Trojan Badger,
Yes - I had seen that. Indeed, I have a bootable USB drive with SLAX on it - lovely! Only problem is... my work laptop is restricted to booting NT - I am locked out of the BIOS (they are a pretty paranoid bunch!).
Rockstar,
I could always use the USB key and carry my soundfonts around on a DVD. However, I want to keep this lean and to the point - basic midi sequencing on the road.
pHz,
That was the inspiration for my question, But can't do it on the work lappy without ASIO.
A new thought...could I manually install ASIO? I mean it's basically a DLL, innit???????

Well it seems to run OK here from a USB key. USB aside, it works! Will need to test more....
I looked around the website and there is a plug-in that enables loading of VSTs!
This is the most promising I've seen. It CAN be done!
Also, the VSTSeq works - as a standalone it can import 4 VSTs (enough!), and it can also be used within Tu2.
Thanks for the tip-offs Brad.

True, but XT requires ASIO...scuzzphut wrote:EXT doesn't require installation - it's just an .exe file.
Not at all. This lappy is locked down.scuzzphut wrote:how about dual booting ? is that an option?
Looking at VSTSeq - simple, standalone, loads VST - does the job. I like.

Sure! Maybe you can give me tips about video dj-ish image generators like ArKaos etc? That's something I'm trying to learn. Anyway, Bram's programs sound very good to me, I don't like that they're somewhat closed loop but they sound really good. Try Hammerhead also, it's a drum sequencer that you can stream live session recordings with and I have been able to use it to trigger my guitar on some avant guitar recordings. Anyway, praise to Bram, he has developed TunaFish with pretty good VST/VSTi integration and automation for a simple sequencer, and it sounds good to me. Some other good features. Today he's circulating late betas for testing so I think he'll release it quite soon. I used the next-previous beta to record most of this: http://3pupsmusic.homestead.com/files/S ... s_Mine.mp3Consumer Whore wrote:Well it seems to run OK here from a USB key. USB aside, it works! Sounds like finding a way to sneak the second laptop along may be worthwhile.

Buzz.
No installation required. Super powerful. No samples needed (but welcome. TONS of small file instruments/effects. Very fast even on non ASIO. Very small. Files are self contained and auto-compressed!

Thanks again for the suggestions - here is progress so far...
Buzz comes as a executable, so installation is required, no?. I tried it anyway, got some missing dll error before the application was stopped. I see mention that Buzz can run from a CD - which would imply
that running from USB stick is also viable. Soma - Is there a precompiled version available?
I had a quick look at Bmix - mmmm - will try later....
Last night I successfuly ran energyXT in VSTseq on both my XP machine and the NT one.
With the XP machine: I was able to load complete projects in energyXT without problems. Stability looked
OK - no strange behaviour to report. Also, I ran VSTseq and several VSTs from my USB key, without issue. Although not a conclusive test, this shows that it is possible to run these apps directly from a USB key.
But...
On the crappy NT box: Running VSTseq from the USB and importing a dll causes immediate crash. However, when I copied the folder containing VSTseq and various plugins to the hard-drive, it worked - to the extent that I could open energyXT and a few plugins, though not all. I got sound, so I went to bed very encouraged.
Today, unfortunately, as soon as I load energyXT into VSTseq, the machine instantly and irreversibly hangs.
I tried a few other VSTs, but the whole lot is unstable now. Strange. I wonder what's changed in the meantime...
I also tried VSThost and SAVIhost: (http://www.hermannseib.com/english/vsthost.htm)
...both look tasty, but crash NT as soon as I load a dll. I think these might run from USB on a more sophisticted (i.e. working) operating system.
Going back to have another look at Tu2 (http://www.brambos.com/whatis.html) - to check energyXT compatability - will report progress....
