Hey guys new to the forum. I am guessing there are quite a few guitar players among the members and I was wondering what everybody is using in terms of virtual effects and such. I am into realtime stuff, Using the computer as an effects processor. I hope I am being clear. I have a signal coming out of the computer but it's clean..It's from a basic preamp..What sort of effects do I need..free one etc to creat some cool sounds..Thx for any info you can give me guys..

Sorry for all the questions guys I am new to the Vst things. I want to just be able to plug my guitar in and have effected sound....How do I do it?

You need a vst host, which is like a DAW but only for using vst as stand alone effects. Google "free vst host" and there will be several.ROBSCIX wrote:OK, Cool looked and downloaded some. Check out the other thread that's on the first page of the effects board about amp sims to get some links to free amp sims and also guitar-type effects. The maker of FreeAmpSE makes some nice stop box emulations, for instance. In the SimulAnalog suite you will also find some very well done classic stompers, as well as the awesome Oberheim PS-1 phaser.

Also, since you're new to soft effects, be aware that latency varies all over the board on vst effects and sims. Some are useable real time, others sort of, some definitely not, so you will have to experiment, but chances are if it's intended for guitar it will have reasonably low latency. It also will depend on the strength of your (I assume laptop) PC. The faster your PC, the lower you can set your soundcard buffer for lower overall latency.

Also check the KVR database for hosts (top part of the bar on your left). Look up "hosts" appropriate to your OS.

Get and install ASIO4All if you don't have ASIO drivers. It's free and I think easy and it kills latency problems for me. Get a host like TobyBear's Minihost or Kreatives' Kristal (both are donationware or free for non-commercial use). Get the amp sims mentioned or also Tubebaby, Cortex and FreeAmp SE which I like them bunches and they are free. Also get CTAF's Multifxvst which is an effects chainer (think effects rack in one VST plug space) and is free.

Thanks guys. I am looking for small apps..not like large host programs. I understand about latency. I really appreciate the help though guys, this is a pretty good forum I must say.

These ARE small apps... I use MiniHost; it's designed to load one VSTi (or VST effect, but only my physical ins are available as inputs) at a time. You might want to try Nialls Pedal Board - I haven't, but it looks like it's designed for what you want.
If you want a chain in MiniHost, use Multifxvst or something (I haven't tested it; this thread is the first I've heard of it and since my main host is Cubasis I'm rather pleased).

Definitely get the SimulAnalog suite, though. Their models are the best, IMO, though they don't use convolution for the speaker sims like Boogex.ROBSCIX wrote:Thanks guys. Right, simply combine them using the Chainer host.Frippertronix wrote:Definitely get the SimulAnalog suite, though. I downloaded all the stuff you guys recommended..I just haven't had time to play yet....I am in awe of the stuff available for guitarists these days. I recently bought a new guitar and started playing again. When I was playing as a teenager..early 90's none of this stuff existed. and recording music to a hard drive was unheard of in the home...I think hdd's were only up to 500 meg by then. It just amazes me at the creative possibilities for people. I guess I just appreciate it more because the time periods. The multitrack, sequencers, vst's, VSTi..etc...it freakin' great...
BTW, Do you reccomned any chainer host? ok laod the simul suite, then boogex?. ok that will get me started then after that I can experiment on my own. Thx guys. As I said great forum, I like forums were members actually WANT to help...instead of the snobish attitudes you get on some forums regarding music technology

500mb ?
Maybe when you were rich and famous.
Mine in think it was in 92' was 20mb...
If I remember right the biggest was 60mb that I ever seen back then.
Have fun !
Ops sorry, Chainer is a host but also there is the Chainer VST dll in your folder, so simply load Chainer
into your "main" host and build your chain/rack.

yeah..I guess your right!...lol..long ago. What is the smallest free host there is? See all I wan to do is be able to click load it up and I got effected guitar. The easier the better. I don't want a large program like Cubase or such. Does that make sense?
