no tunafish is brams in-development VST host / sequencer ... in beta now (wish i hadnt killed my membership of the tu2 yahoo group now ... )

slainte :ud: rob

Sounds good - will check it out.

BTW - I just registered Tu2, opened a VSTseq instance, then energyXT, then a sequencer, then Drumatic. Played a few notes and it works. A bit slow though.

Of course it all went pear-shaped once I started messing with the settings. So, stability is the issue.

Tu2 looks quite simple and useful though....

I'm surprised noone has mentioned (Computer) Muzys yet...it runs directly from the executable and your vst dll's can be anywhere. AFAIK, it doesn't rquire asio either, is very stable, and is much more full featured than anything mentioned so far (except EXT, of course).

Oh, and it will only cost the price of a magazine (Computer Music) to find out if it works for you.

Mmm - I have some CM discs from last year lying about. Is Muzys updated frequently?

I'll give it a go!

Thanks for the tip...

OK - I found a dusty CM CD with Muzys (1.5). I'm pleased to report that it's now running direct from my USB key!

Nice one!

:D

p.s. woo-hoo!

...it hasn't been updated since 2003....a sore spot for many users, but if it works for you, go ahead and use it. It is still very good for what it is (probably still the best free host/sequencer).

It's a real shame that VST Host and Savi Host don't work for you. I can't test if it works via usb key on my system (XP sp2) but I just had it running Energy XTE off a SD Memory Card through a PCMCIA card reader using Savi Host and the standard MME Drivers, so I think it's probably an NT issue.

I would contact the author of VST Host at: him [at] hermannseib [dot] com

I hear he's a nice chap maybe he can help you out? :)

You could of course use Energy XTE within CMuzys in the same way but I bet Savi Host and VST Host would use less cpu... And both programs are still updated and don't have the restrictions that CMuzys has (limited VST count, several newer VSTs don't work, etc.).

Buzz comes as a executable, so installation is required, no?. I tried it anyway, got some missing dll error before the application was stopped. I see mention that Buzz can run from a CD - which would imply

that running from USB stick is also viable. Soma - Is there a precompiled version available?
:P
No installer nessicary. YOu might need the windows drivers mdxfasdjkfja;slk (can't remember) but they are installed on XP.

If you post teh exact message I can help you better.

Post

for on the road maybe a program like REASON might be a better option.

Post

you can use anything which doesnt store important stuff in the windows registry. this limits you mainly to freeware because most commercial software stores at least copy protection/registration data

Post

bMix doesn't store important stuff in windows registry-so that might be a option.

I'm not sure about current versions, but older versions of FL studio didnt require an "instalation". All it did was unzip files to the "Program Files/FL Studio/" folder. I used to run the FL demo off a CD at work and then export audio to mp3.

Post

Thanks again everybody.

bMix just doesn't work I'm afraid.

Muzys works OK, but it's mono only for vsts.

ezeeboogie talks a lot of sense, VST host looks ideal. I've contacted Hermann...

I wouldn't count on that 8-)
(Said author)

No really, the error description I got emailed sounds more like a problem somewhere in the Windows NT installation, and I can hardly fix THAT.

BTW, I do test VSTHost and SAVIHost on Windows NT4 (SP5) regularly, and have no problems (except that it needs a relatively large buffer size with the crappy AC97 on-board sound and the associated drivers). No USB, of course.

I didn't even know you hung around on KVR! Good to see you here. I'd just like to say thanks for VST Host and Savi Host, they are seriously fantastic! :)
