hi all, :help: im new to the music scene and i would like to acuire some mixing programs and possibly some computer hardware for instrument input and output, have noticed a few years back a cheap creative brand unit which had inputs below the cd drives and a sound card (6.1 channel) if anyone can help me out, i am after some freeware to start off with and possibly consider purchasing some software if all goes well. 8)

Not "freeware", but "relaxed demos" :
EnergyXT
AudioMulch
Bidule
and ASIO4ALL if you need it

Well OK, Bidule is actually a "relaxed pre-re".

audacity as a wave editor might as well fit into the toolkit, this time free. buzz is a mix between tracker and modular host, also free.

Now a days...you could get a software sequencer bundled with a piece of hardware. Check out some M-Audio's products...they usually come with something.

Or PreSonus' Firebox, it comes with Cubase LE I think....

Granted though...they're not cheap.... Depends on what you're looking for...you're paying for what you're getting usually.

I'd stay away from "Creative" stuff...they generally are built for computer gamers...not recording musicians/hobbists.
