New Planet Found in our Solar System

I hate to use this forum for other info besides M42 and other algomusic vst but.

I am sure you already know about this Tim but maybe others here have not heard this yet. They just discovered the tenth planet in our solar system (unamed yet)I had heard that some had predicted this for years but it did not get accepted by main stream astronomers. I guess all the textbooks will now have to be rewritten.

And you will have to start a new preset bank for m42 in honor of this new discovery. :) I know I will be working on some new tunes for this as well. :D

Very, very cool! Lots of great discoveries in our lifetime, exciting!

Its old news. The story broke last week around the time the problems with the shuttle happened so it kinda got pushed aside. The thing is, if they call this a planet then they also have to call Quaor and Sedna planets giving our solar system 12. And there may be more lurking out there. One even the size of Earth a scientist said recently. So the solar system could get a lot more crowded. Our kids may grow up learning not of 9 but of 12 planets or 15 or 20 circling our Sun alone, not to mention the sure to rise number of 155 planetary systems outside of our solar system.

Probably by then we'll know of other blue planets like earth.

Quaor and Sedna are considerably smaller than pluto, this new one's apparently 30% bigger (and 44 degrees outside of the planetary plane). Mind you, pluto is in dangerous waters - many people want to demote Pluto to mere Kuiper belt object instead of full planet.

I was more excited about the ice lake in the crater of mars ESA's mars express found at the same time. Saturday was a good day for space news!

Right, back to codin' and music... Good to know there's other space geeks here tho.

But they are all Kuiper belt objects including this new as yet unnamed one. The new one has an eccentric orbit like Quaor and Sedna and other large objects out there. So are we going to give planet status to anything pluto sized and up regardless of how circular it's orbit is? What if we find a highly eccentric long period object in between mars and jupiter or jupiter and saturn with an orbit inclined 45 degrees to the plane of the solar system and with the mass of Pluto? Would that then become the 5th or 6th planet thus changing the numbers of all after it?

Yes. There are bound to be more of those too.

I wrote a space themed album. it was my first one. blame Chaka Khan for being an early influence on me with her space funk. to be honest i am more concerned with the goings on on earth but the amount of new information from all sciences goes to show just when people think they know it all there is something more to learn.

Yeah...been reading up on this...but hard to shift the wheat from the chaff. Guess we have to wait untill there is an "official" report:-)

Its very old news. The Astronomers have been sitting on the information for 2 years and havnt been able to verify it. It was brought to light by a hacker !!!
