Right now, I'm using Cakewalk Music Creator Pro24 for my VST host (with the Cakewalk VST Adapter), and it works fine. Unfortunately, it's not that good for live performance - it doesn't even support splits or layers. I use it for sequencing, and it's really great at that, but I do a lot of live playing. Are there any good live performance VST hosts out there that aren't very expensive, or if possible, free?

P.S. You can use SynthEdit to do layers and splits and stuff, but I can't get it to work with ASIO. I have a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS soundcard with ASIO support.

http://www.ableton.com/ 500€
http://www.plogue.com/ 50€ or so
http://www.audiomulch.com/ 40€ or so
http://www.xt-hq.com/ 40€

First one is more loop based. The others are modular hosts.

Prices are not accurate, sorry.

I bought ableton for 250€. There was a lite version in my audio interface (m-audio) box which contained an offer to upgrade for 250€.

I tried MiniHost before - I'm pretty sure you can only load one intstrument at a time.

Brainspawn Forte. It is designed and optimized for live performance.

Add CTAF's Multifxvst, a free chainer that really opens MiniHost wide.

why not run energyXT as a "subhost" in Cakewalk. Just load it into a track, so that you feed midi into it. Then in energyXT load your favorite VSTs (sorry, no DXI support) and use its MIDI Pathcer to make splits and layers and Arpeggiator (phrase sequencer) for drums or basses etc. Great fun. www.xt-hq.com/download (go for the latest beta). The eXT forum at http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=36

If you've got eXT, why on earth would you want to use Cakewalk?

The Metasurface feature of AudioMulch is freeaking amazing, don't miss it. Not all VST and VSTi plugs work with it, but I can drop you a list of ones that do if you want.

Do you have a virtual midi cable of some sort?
