What's the quality difference between convution reverbs?

The convolution engine is as important as the IRs. The Spirit Canyon IRs sound completely different in Pristine Space than they do in SIR for example and no where near as good, I might add.

Are you saying that they sound better in SIR, or in PS ... ?bugs wrote:The convolution engine is as important as the IRs. The Spirit Canyon IRs sound completely different in Pristine Space than they do in SIR for example and no where near as good, I might add.

Far better in Pristine Space, but so different that I kept SIR as a mangler--not an IR mangler, but a sound mangler. Love your IRs!dburgan wrote:Are you saying that they sound better in SIR, or in PS ... ?bugs wrote:The convolution engine is as important as the IRs. Hey, do check out RayVerb... I think it sounds good & use it as my bread'n'butter reverb.

And how do you get long smooth tails out of it?ghost666 wrote:Hey, do check out RayVerb... I think it sounds good & use it as my bread'n'butter reverb.
For me, it seems more to be an early reflection toy...
But might be very useful for postproduction, anyway.

FYI,
Check out the link below:
A Technical Note on 'Convo Boy' Audio Quality.
Be aware that, when comparing different convolution engines, it is important to ensure that you are comparing exactly the same "settings" i.e. compare wet with only wet signal. Ensure that the IR is being resampled to the same rate in each plug-in. Perform a gain calibration, so that dynamic range and gain are the same.

kevvvv, other users have communicated the exact opposite to me. There is a dependence on the settings, as I mentioned above. Be sure you are using the same sample rate, and that you are really comparing apples with apples. Only the most recent version of 'Convo Boy' has 'Match SR' on by default.kevvvvv wrote:I took the convolution wavs from Kontakt 2 and tried feeding them into Convo Boy.
I don't think they sounded as good.

Yeah, I've been following this thread, and I think the differences are as much about variables in set up as anything else. Reviews in SOS, for example, seem to indicate that differences in how the same IRs sound in different convolvers are insignificant per se, all other things being equal. Of course, they're often not equal. But unless someone's doing critical A-B listening, I think in the end it's possible to get what you like out of all of them. After all, it's music and sound, and that's subjective in every way.Space Boy wrote:There is a dependence on the settings, as I mentioned above. I have PSL and am quite pleased with it using the Spirit Canyon IR's. Given its feature set the price for PSL is very, very right.kevvvvv wrote:I took the convolution wavs from Kontakt 2 and tried feeding them into Convo Boy.

In K2 the convolution reverb sounds quite good, especially with the VSL strings.
But when the wavs are moved across something gets lost.
Maybe I should buy Pristine Space Lite (or at least try the demo) and try the K2 wavs that way.
Would anyone recommend the Pristine Space Lite route?
At $59 ... well

That makes it only for post work, not useful for live playing, right?Reverend Rhythm wrote:There are two differences I can think of:
1. They sound different, even with the same IRs. This is subjective, but important.
2. They vary in the latency (delay) they cause. For example, SIR has a fixed latency of 8960 samples.

Are there any commercial IR libraries with true stereo IRs in the quality of the stuff coming with waves IR-1? I don't want to have to buy that only to get hands on the IRs

But, no ones mentioned that IRs from the different converluted reverbs can be quite different.

I've been comparing SIR with PSL and have noticed that SIR has some serious problems with it's handling of low frequencies - every time a kick drum is played, for example, I hear a definite digital buzz.
