Post

This poll has been inspired by a recent thread here

http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic ... 70&start=0

The question is, Is it really true that by visiting K-v-R you make ‘less’ music, I mean to the point where it has affected your production and interest, by replacing the interest of music making with K-v-R forum browsing – Or – has it ‘inspired you’ to create more due to the competitions and new and exciting vsti products that get released during the year. Maybe the topics invoke the need to try out different things – or do you read them but not try them?

Best regards,

Unfortunately, I must admit, yes, I probably spend less time making music and more time here than I did say, one year ago. :smack: :dog: :bang: :nutter: :help:

Although recently I was away to 2 weeks and when I got back nothing much had happened, update wise or interesting topic wise, so maybe I will spend more time productively. In the last 2 weeks away I wrote 2 new songs and finished the arrangements for 3 where I had completed 1 or 2 songs in the year leading up to that. Time is the main issue but it can't help to spend too much time here. Which begs the question, who cares what I'm saying and why don't I go and do something useful instead of blabbing on ..........

It's part of the addiction.

kvr + uncontrolableurgetosearchforupdatesandbuynewgear

=get nothing done

this is the newest drug for most of us

but it's still more productive than horse, and the comedown/withdrawl is much less harsh!

And you get to keep the stuff you buy!

For me personally, I'd say it is more inspiring than anything... Though I do see it being a bit of an addiction too!

I think it's great listening (reading) to other musicians hair-pulling experiences with making music. At least I know it's not just me who experiences those!

And the production techniques forum has been most helpful in my endeavour to become a better 'mixer'

Cheers.

I vote: Other

reason: I have the fortune of being able to take a minute here and ther at work to browse a bit - I often work at home. It doesn't really compete for time. I'm also not a professional musician: I write for me, no pressure or deadlines. KVR doesn't inspire me as their is great music alla round. What it does it sharpen my technical understanding and immerse me in a community and discussion I would not otherwise have access to. Thanks :)

i'm a procrastinator. i need themes and expiry dates to get the job done. nothing is more inspiring than the KvR monthly contests. besides, i feel emulated by what i hear around. my music wouldn't evolve as it does without KvR.

the whole world has been craving for my time the last 2 years - kvr has been the only spot which kept me enthusiastic to keep this hobby (read the members)

I voted for "It inhibits my production". I had a period of about two weeks, a while ago, when I was unable to use the internet and, during that time, I did more musically then I do in three months when I am connected to the internet. 75% of my time on the internet is spent at KVR. Damn you KVR! :tantrum:

Of course, I could look at it this way:- by spending all my time at KVR I spend less time trying to create music and can tell myself that if only I pushed myself that little bit harder and did not waste so much time at KVR I would produce that wonder song that will be the first in a long line of money spinning, platinum disc, fan adoring hits. I love you KVR!

This poll and the results so far have now invoked a ton of questions.

Out of those who have voted, or will vote – are you new to music making on the PC? new to music altogether? primarily a live instrument player? Are the results affected by different age groups or is it spread evenly among them? Is music your primary living or just an interest or are hopeful that the music will take you somewhere in the future? Do you browse k-v-r primarily from work or at home or both? What percentage of those that vote, are, or have been, susceptible/affected by addiction?

It could be said that those that use k-v-r, use it not for the music making aspects itself, but more as a social gathering – so it could be seen as having three main groups – one those that get deep into music making or two, those that use k-v-r for occasional research in to new tools and support, and three for the social group – hence the split in the poll.

Thank you to all those that voted, It’s an interesting result and one that is both surprising and not surprising at the same time, it just depends how deep you look at it I guess.

The monthly contests show me how worthless I am and make me try to do a little bit better next month.

Apart from that KvR seriously inhibits my production...

I'm in for the obligatory fish :)

KVR has improved my technical skills in many ways and has also inspired some music creation, but recently I only read, post and don't do much music anymore. Guess that's mainly due to my day time job, where I can browse KVR but not make music... and so the addiction gets worse...

i used to go on KVR a lot when I was at work and this made me super productive once I got home because I've been reading so much about music/production stuff while at the office when I come home i'm already so pumped up about making tunes - like within 5 mins of arriving at home I'd have my main DAW on and running ready to go. ;) It was just awesome (and boring at times though...) 'cause I worked in an office where I had to do about 2~4 hours of work every day and spend the rest of the time just waiting for customers to call (worked in a call centre - go figure hehe) so had all the time in the world to surf the web, read/learn stuff about whatever interest me (not just music), write stories and just plain have fun while getting paid full-time wages! and i come home and also get to be super productive about music hehe I always felt this was the second best thing to being a full time musician. :D

1. That's me too. If I have no deadline I'll just stare at a screen for hours.

2. Second, the people at KvR inspires me. 2 Years ago I was a cover artist making other people's music. KvR inspired me to get out and compose my own stuff. Emerald Tablet, Wopelka, Gordon, Krim, DT, vurt etc all inspired me to do things.

3. I need a benchmark to know what I must improve and I need people to help me improve. I could not do it on my own. Ppl here gave me a way to find out what I do wrong and helped me and gave advice on how to make it right. (Many laughed when I talked about how to define music quality. I still do not know that answer, but by making a study of ppl here I surely improving my quality)

Another good time for thanks and huggies all around.

PS, many has been personal strength to me when I was down.

Doesn't really affect my rate or style of production at all, apart from getting involved in the Saligia project. I do most of my networking elsewhere.
