Why are sampled pianos so flat?

Well, for the literal-minded, I guess I should have said, "I bought the Art Vista based on the piano sound and the ambience in the demo".

Never mind that I already stated I liked the piano sound earlier. Did you think I had changed my mind between the two posts? Why did my earlier comment not count?

Hello All,

What sounds beautiful my ear is my primary
concern. Like I said I can get excited on hearing
a single note from many real pianos. It is this mellow
sweetness that my ears crave. The note should
evolve and modulate slightly. If I can get this with
little or no fx I will be very happy.

I have spent some time tweaking the sampled pianos with
EQ and reverb and this helped little. AKJ
is obviously better at this than me, but still
it was not what I want. I have not given up
on EQ and reverb. I will try again.

If you carefully listen the Artvista VGP demo
and perhaps other sampled piano which I may
not be aware of you will hear the this sweetness
and slight modulation take place. This is IMO
what gives the piano life. It is in the piano not in
the room effects. My two cents.

For me I Suppose it is more important to find a “great”
not “good” sampled piano or to tweak one than to
find why the mediocre sampled pianos are
so mediocre.

flugel45, I would like you opinion on the Artvista
now that you may have used it a few more times.
Is it as good as the first impression?

sometimes I enjoy the decay of a single unplayed note

I'm not necessarily a purist, but I feel that too many unplayed notes at once might turn out muddy in some subtle way

Unfortunately, I'm in the middle of building a new DAW PC and it's not complete. I got the VGP disc yesterday when I still had my old machine in one piece (I'm scavenging parts of it for the new one), and in the little time I played around with it, it sounded good to me!

I'm trying to finish the new DAW this weekend, but I can't guarantee this (My original deadline was actually last weekend ! ). So, whenever I do manage to finish it, I will test VGP more thoroughly and let you know what I think.
