it just frustrates me that most of the commercial softwares out there has been cracked. sound libraries can now be downloaded off the internet :( . i was thinking of getting some more sound libraries but what's the use of buying a commercial refill or apple loops now? yes, buying is doing the right thing. but if i buy, i might as well invest in something that pirates can't pirate :) ...say a Poly Evolver  or a Voyager . at least that'll get me ahead of them :hihi: .

dont get me wrong...i love soft/soundwares. i do my sequencing on the pc but these days i'm using my hardwares more and more for sound source.

understand my point? any comments?

Not really. What's the relationship between what you do with purchase version and what they do with cracked version. If I buy it, it's because i want to use it in my music. If someone downloads a crack then it is for some reason ranging from mild curiosity right up to knowing what it does, really wanting it, but being too pathetic to pay for it. Either way it still just comes down to what you do with it. I not going to sell my Les Paul because there are thousands of people out there that own them.

I'm not trying to be a smart ass either. I just think I buy plugs I like and want to use to help me make music. I don't care who else owns it. It doesn't affect me (not takling into account how piracy affects registration processes, plugin cost etc). Although a good user base is usually helpful.

So you base your purchasing decisions around whether or not other people are pirating what you intend to buy? :?

I doubt that the 'man on the street' actually cares if your using software, hardware, a blow dryer with a vocoder, etc. People want good songs, interesting sounds, and a nod to whatever lifestyle they've chosen to program themselves with. I rarely use presets, so I've found it doesn't matter what I use.

Having been around the block a few times, I can tell you that warez are just as infiltrated at the bigger studios, who can afford arps and evolvers, as they are in some twiddlers bedroom.

Just as learning music theory isn't going to indoctrinate you into a certain musical style, a certain peice of equipment shouldn't tie you to a preconception of what is possible with that equipment.

I helped a friend of mine in the studio recently. He was crazy about a bass sound I used on a remix I did for him. He had to know what I used-minimoog, etc. It was a Kawai K1 patch I wrote, run through an alesis philtre, and layered with one patch of trilogy.

sorry for a bit of a siderail...

one argument against software piracy i don't agree with at all is "i hate piracy because i have to pay my hard-earned money for the software that some people get for free illegally"

i mean, i do understand that there are people who are frustrated or envious that they've had to work hard to achieve something while some other people just take it for nothing. and i wholeheartedly understand people who are pissed off and concerned about the various forms of nasty copy protection that hurt honest users more than pirates and that piracy might be a reason for raising prices.

but ultimately, when i buy a piece of software, i'm buying it because i have use for it and consider it fair that the creators get paid. if someone else doesn't have the same line of thought then fine, i don't really care. i do care that developers don't get money for their hard work but i don't care that someone gets for free something i've paid for. it's their choice and this is mine.

So what if some individuals decide to use illegal copies of software without a license to use it? If I paid for the software I have a license, so I'm covered. If someone uses serious warez (like programs that cost 1000s and 1000s) and they get caught then they deserve whatever they get. The developers have often spend millions creating and testing the programs, they deserve to get paid, they have mouths to feed and they need to earn a living. Pirating small-time software is really nasty, those small-time developers like Voxengo have really excellent prices for their plug-ins so I can't see why people shouldn't pay for them if they decide to use them. I've got some demos - Pristine Space Light, Warmifier, and Voxformer. I know that I'll probably buy all three when I've got the money. Until then I just use the demos to audition (and drool) at how amazing they are. I'm sure Voxengo would hate to see their rightful profits falling by the wayside when pirating scum are distributing their plugins with KeyGens.

you must not drive a honda then, cause they get stolen all of the time

it's funny (and also a bit sad and frightening) that even the most moronic arguments will still lead to discussions...

that's right stale bread. i have a warezed honda. but not a hybrid.
and i'd never drive a pirated minicoop, or smart car. they deserve my support, when I become financially inclined to become a potential customer. :)
worry about warez-users if your a fed or a warez group member. why worry about their musicianship? I used to know this guy, [he's a registered KVR member] has a nice record contract, does chic shows all over the world. a few years back, I saw him and 'his crew' playing a gig together. little laptops everywhere. I couldn't help but take a peek at their software. they were all using reaktor. in fact, they were all using a version i'd never seen before...with a new H2O splash screen. the gig sucked, they had no clue, and he asked me if i had a reaktor manual he could borrow.
he couldn't pirate actual talent.
please don't get a poly-evolver because it's cool. how about a scarface-sized pile cocaine?

In the electro/ebm scene, the attitude that warez are ok, but the elite use hardware, is common. I simply posted to influence people who are on the fence, and may be lurking, to offer a different point of view.

One of the reasons for this attitude is the idiot from Velvet Acid Christ. He has snobby reviews of hardware on his site, yet advocates in both interviews and in forums that he will only use a pc for music because of all the warez available. His adherents, who are notsobrite14yr.olds commonly spout this nonsense.

And this is a guy who's sold 150k worth of albums on metropolis.
