Im using Ableton Live 4 and from the miscellaneous menu in preferences im setting up Wavelab Lite as my audio editor. Problem is when I want to edit a clip, wavelab opens but I get no sound and a message saying "playback could not start successfully" part of which says that if using cubase I can solve the problem by switching off the mode "playback in background" in the cubase preferences. Is there a similair option in Live? Im using a Terratec DMX 6 Fire card by the way.

Hi,

The problem is with the soundcard I'm afraid (I have the same one, along with Live and Wavelab).

Basically, it's because you are using the ASIO driver. Unfortunately, the Terratec doesn't like using multiple programs at the same time.

Unfortunately, I haven't found the "playback in background" option in Live; I'm not sure it supports it. I'm not aware of a workaround (other than closing Live) - maybe somebody else can help us :D

Thanks, good to know im not alone. The weird thing is it used to work, without me altering any settings, no randomely it wont.

That's even more strange, then! I wonder if Wavelab or Live were using a different driver?

ive tried changing the driver in Wavelab (I have 2 soundcards, just a cheapo one)and still no joy.

Can you not change the default driver for WaveLab away from ASIO altogether?

The reason I suggest that is...

I use Adobe Audition, which does not (yet) use ASIO drivers in the first place. Because it defaults to my soundcard's WDM driver, there is no conflict. I simply hit the Edit button in the Lve clipview, and Audition opens with the audio clip loaded.

Because you are using Wavelab for editing the clip, you are not recording, etc, you do not need to be using the ASIO drive in Wavelab anyway (you would only need to use the ASIO drive if you wanted to record directly into WaveLab).

So my advice is, Use your ASIO drive in Live, set Wavelab's preferences to default to the WDM drive (or whatever alternative you have).

Hope this may help.

Quick update. I changed the drivers in Live to MME/Direct X and now im getting sound in both Live and Wavelab. But I dont want to use this driver in Live because of the latency problem. Must Wavelab insist on using the asio driver?

Oh, and setting my cheap built in soundcard in Wavelab does nothing.
