well, might as well post a link to a development test version .... for the daring...

http://www.devine-machine.com/steve/CheapShiftb4.rar

- CPU hog
- does not correctly save/load params/presets in your host
- buffer offsets can sometimes get... well.. offset (Amplitude Mod kind of sound)
- top slider is wet/dry
- remember, its a cheap shift, not going for quality

comments and enthusiasm are appreciated (I can always use motivation!) ;) steve_at_devine-machine.com

Very cool, Steve.

So comments and enthusiasm here, or would you prefer email?

cheers ...anything's fine!

as for cheapshift, it is what it is in a sense - I'll probably get the CPU consumption down, fix the note-on keyclicks, maybe add a couple params for some deeper circuit chaos control and call it done :)

Well, I like it a lot. Thanks very much for sharing this.

Much more like a sampler/wavetable synth thing than I expected. Very different from other pitchshifters I have. Having the envelope and multiplay are great additions.

So, some questions:

What do the numbers mean?
I get some pops and clicks even when CPU is low. Is that what you mean by cheapshit (second button I hit :) ), or could my system settings be refined for better performance?

Only feature request I would have is some way of clearing out the buffer, either an empty button or the buffer empties as you shorten it. The buffer is mighty big when set to max, I tried one sound then another, 30 seconds later moved to max and there was the old sound.

Post

Well the pops and clicks I've managed to work around with different kinds of material fiddling around with the buffer and multiplay, so I can live with them. The buffer at max can be a very strange place indeed, like Crazy Ivan came to visit.

Very fun thing you've made.

All of a sudden, I find myself reading all kinds of comments that make me want to download this.

//edit: which reminds me: there's still some stuff I need to upload.
Pop music delenda est.

this one is really good.
the quality may be low ( to be honest is much better than other free pitchshifters) ...but has nice 8 bit presence to it and doesn't get harsh or nasty at any pitch. always usable and musical.
this needs to be set up as a vocoder right?( not sure i rememebr how) ....cos as an insert effect on an audio track can't get it to receive midi.I had to click on the keys to hear it in action.

Yeah, correct- set somewhat like a vocoder would (well like Lucifer would), as an audio insert with MIDI (notes) routed to it. Which host?

its easy in the main window on EnergyXT (MIDI and audio inputs appear as wires at the top of the plugin).

got it to work like this and i guess it applys to any other host too:
opened it as insert on the audio track and opened it on a midi track too. then routed the midi track to the audio track. thats all.
cpu hog though :/
i confirm what i said before...to me the quality is acceptable/suitable for music....which i could not say about other free pitchshifters(which sounded nasty/harsh/painful). plus the midi keys implementation is just fantatsic .

thx a lot for this one. most important free plugin that has come out in a while.
