that's actually not the case. all things being equal, the impulses make much more of a difference than the convolution method. i recently did an informal test of impulses from altiverb, ir1, space designer, tl space and noisevault. i compared emt 140/250, lex480 and cello rooms and the results were surprising - the ir1 impulses sounded the best...bugs wrote:The convolution engine is as important as the IRs.
What's the quality difference between convution reverbs?

how did the noisvault IRs perform in comparison with the commercial stuff? Did you also check Impulse Modeler IRs. I found them, alhough being artificially craeted, very convincing.

i haven't tried the impulse modeler ir's yet - thanks for the tipAKJ wrote:how did the noisvault IRs perform in comparison with the commercial stuff? Did you also check Impulse Modeler IRs. I found them, alhough being artificially craeted, very convincing.
as for the ones i tried, i'd rate them as follows:
1) ir1
2) altiverb
3) noisevault
4) tl space
5) space designer
some of the free noisevault ir's sounded better than i expected... especially when you consider that tl space costs $500... just my opinion, though.

Well, I guess that soon enough we might have AltiVerb on the PC, eh??CANE CREEK wrote:This months 'Future music' magazine lined up Altiverb5 , space designer & Waves IR-1 v2 and let them fight it out.
IR-1's achilles heel is its price its just too high , yet it did get placed slightly ahead of 'space designer' when it came to sound quality.
Altiverb5 took first place due to its features, its flexibility and sheer beauty of sound.
