PanHandle

Volume and Pan controls with adjustable pan law to control the exact amount of attenuation when panned centrally.. also works as a balance control for stereo signals. Made with SynthMaker and (so far) tested only in Tracktion

I don't understand - what is "pan law", and what does this do? Thanks, Matt

It is standard practise to implement a drop in level when the signal is panned centrally, to compensate for the boost in level that would occur as a result of two speakers replaying the signal instead of just one.

The idea is to maintain a constant apparent volume as the signal is panned across the field.. I think all mixers do this, but there is no consensus on what is "correct" with some using -3dB at the centre, some using -6dB etc.

Some hosts allow you to select the pan law used.. but Tracktion's is fixed at a slightly unconventional 0db at the centre with a 6dB boost at either extreme. This is not to everyone's tastes, hence this plug ;)

Okay, cool - but what is the 'typical' db at the edges (L/R) - and how does Tracktion's implementation affect some people's tracks? Thanks, M@

panning hard left or right should restore that channel to its original level.. Tracktion otoh leaves the signal unaffected when central, and boosts it by 6dB when hard panned.

Its just a matter of taste really..

Is it parameter smoothed? :) or not? :(

Yes it is. :) If you hear any zipper noise its a bug, please let me know!

You cant beat people up then have them say "I love you"

an analog mixer works by simply removing the opposite side of that you're panning to b.t.w. (e.g. full pan right means -infite db left) - imo that's the only correct solution - I think all software panning laws are utter bullshit!

great tool, Dan! :-D 8)

Very cool IIRs! Thanks so much for making this.

One small suggestion for improvement though: how about a button to toggle forced mono for the track? Thats often very helpful when messing around with pan/balance.

great tool!
thanks a lot :)
