Be careful downloading from Complete VST Amp Sim List

I'm new to this forum. I began to download free VST amp simulators in the thread entitled: "The Complete VST Amp Sim List." I ended up downloading the Aurora and Nail.exe malware programs, along with a host of other assorted, nasty adware, pop ups, and browser hijackers. I hope the original poster did not insert a link to this nasty stuff, but I have just spent the last five hours trying to rid my computer of this stuff, and its still not gone. I suggest that the forum moderators investigate, delete the thread, and ban whomever is responsible for inserting a link to malware.

Hi. Welcome. I'm sorry your arrival here caused you some probs, but I have to say that calling for someone to banned in your very first post here isn't perhaps the best move.
I'm sure the poster of that thread didn't put malware in his links - they'd be in the links on the sites themselves, not here. That's hardly his fault. Rather, identify which sites uploaded the malware to your machine, then complain to the offending sites owners.
Also, try using a firewall, anti-virus and ad and spyware catchers.

Thank you for the welcome to KVR. As you can probably tell, I was (and still am) furious that a link to a website has caused my machine to be overwhelmed with malware that I am still trying to remove. I have a firewall, antivirus, and adware detectors. It got through all of them.
I appreciate members that post collections of links to effects, instruments and the like. It's a decent, human thing to do. However, if one is going to go to the trouble to collect and post such information, it would be a simple courtesy to either: (a) perform at least a cursory review to ensure that the links work or that they do not download malware, or (b) insert a line in the post that this type of review has not been done, and that the user should download at his or her own risk.
I would hope that no one on this great forum would intentionally place a link to malware on one of these threads. I am not accusing anyone of doing that. My intent in this post was not to get someone banned. That's why I suggested that the moderators investigate. My intent was to warn others so that they would not end up like me, downloading malware, when all they wanted was to try out an guitar amp sim.

Im the maker of that list, and i didnt have any idea that stuff was on those links, im sorry it caused you problems but theres no reason to start griping and trying to get me banned over your computer not being properly protected. downloading at your own risk is part of hte internet my friend and internet security on your computer is noones resposibility but your own. im sorry it caused you problems, from now on just stay away from the post if its gonna cause you that many problems. or give me a list of the links you visisted that gave you that stuff and ill put up a comment on the post about it.

Ya, its a bit hard to even contemplate someone reviewing all links they might post - i collect links over the course of years. I can't imagine going back to half of them but i'd give them to someone in a heartbeat if they asked for links relating to whatever they collected. Its not my problem what those links lead to - as a savvy computer user, i'd take responsibility for whatever it was that i downloaded.
Hope that doesnt sound harsh, but its a reality - do the sites look professional? do they look like they're from a legit vendor? or are they some list of other goodies that just give you a link to some zip or exe? If thats the case, i'd always search out the original source for the file first. I've never had malware from a legit vendor or even some of the freebie vsts - i just look a bit into them first before i install them to make sure they have a reputaion.

he accused me of putting the links in the post, and then that whoever did that should be banned.

Yes, what t-willy asked goes for me too. I'd also be interested in knowing whether anyone else has experienced similar trouble from the links in that thread?
Furlan, is it possible that the problem you're seeing might already have been there, and you didn't discover it until just then? In other words, have you downloaded anything else recently that might also have been the culprit? It's a good idea to be sure of the facts before making accusations of this kind.

sXeSkiddz2005:
Please reread my post. I have not accused you of doing anything wrong. I appreciate that you took the trouble to assemble links to amp sims, and from reading the long list of replies, many other people are also happy you took the trouble to do it. As I said in my previous post, it was a "human" (i.e. read: "good") thing to do.
In fact, I was so happy you did it, that I felt like a kid in a candy store, starting from the top of the list and clicking links to every free VST amp sim that was on the list. In my exuberance, I don't know even know which one(s) was/were the offending link(s). However, I do know that a few of the links did not connect to a website, but instead downloaded ".zip" files. I don't think I downloaded more than five or six amp sims before I started trying to install them and all hell broke loose.
I know that we're all big boys and girls here, and that we all take responsibility for the protection of our own systems. That's why we all use virus protection, firewalls, and anti-adware software. However, on a forum like this one, where we feel welcome among our fellow musicians in a benevolent environment, we can let our guard down. That's what make the experience of downloading malware even more irritating. It blindsides you out of left field.

Well I just had a look at the list and visited most of the smaller sites again (I am quite sure that NI, IK, Audiomidi etc. can be ruled out), nothing happened and I honestly find it hard to believe that it was one of these sites, that infected your machine. Are you using IE? There is at least one known unfixed bug, where it is enough to visit a page to get infected...

or at least tell where the bad stuff is so other people can investigate or keep away for themselvesWopelka wrote:i second that.Meffy wrote:Furlan, is it possible that the problem you're seeing might already have been there, and you didn't discover it until just then?
