Free web video tutorial, on getting a nice pop (1176LN), on a snare and then getting it to sit well(EMT Plate 140), in a mix, using UAD-1 plugins. I just happened to come across this Snare Workshop lesson and saw two of my favorite UAD-1 plugins being used to perfection. Very nice indeedy! :D

Also, great for non-UAD-1 users, to see these popular plugins, in action.

Thanks for the link.. but being a recording school it's really weird that the narrators sibilance is EXTREMELY nasty. Took my head off! :? Also, he very much overdid the settings imho. I actually prefere the dry, compressed one.

I think the real culprit was the release setting on the compressor. A compressor is going to emphasize the natural room ambience in the recording. What's happening is that the artificial reverb is still going strong on the tail of the natural ambience, and it's making everything muddy.

I don't think this says good things about what this school will be teaching, but the UAD-1 plugs sounded top-notch, considering the circumstances. :D
Excuse all the blood.

What an ugly snare that is

That snare sounded horrendous. I was hoping they would explain how to make the snare sound good in the first place.

My brother took that course and opened a studio professionally. He swears by it and i am planning to join in September. I didn't see that video but Roberts(my bro)recordings sound goooooood. :)

That video is pretty questionable. He compares the uncompressed snare to the squashed one, without compensating for gain. The compressed one is around 4dB louder...so in a quick A/B it will sound better at first. Then he says he is adding "about 4ms" of pre-delay...when he is actually adding more like 30-40ms. He boosts the high-shelf EQ on the 140 up 12dB too, that doesn't seem like a minor midrange lift to me.

The school might be great but that video was kinda crappy.
Those are some damn fine plugins though...

Is it gone, or am I too dumb to find it?
Grist for the glamour mill.
