Really scetchy about exactly what it will do (other than drive us and software developers absolutely nuts)

A little digging and the only thing is that I can find is that they are "boasting" :hihi: some really big improvments in speed across the board.

I hadn't heard that it was out.........so I thought maybe someone else would like to hear.

I went to an MS roadmap seminar yesterday where they demo'd beta 2 (IIRC) of Vista. They concentrated on the GUI and explorer search elements which didn't excite me - interestingly, the MS guys (who I'll give all credit to for being professional and very realistic and even complaining about MS at times) said that Vista was aiming to provide "something" for all 3 levels of users: the end user (GUI changes like transparanecy - whoopee doodley doo), developers (eg. better COM/API model which sounds potentially useful with my developer hat on) and system administrators (some of the functionality for management/roll-outs (eg. WIM file support) sounds useful but not that useful).

Overall verdict...OK, but not really exciting from an audio POV.

it's always a tradeoff between power & easiness.. as much as I prefer the good old messaging system, I wanted to support tablet PC's, and the stylus SDK is a TOTALLY different beast from the mouse input.

On one side you have the old fixed integer mouse coordinates and button messages for just a couple of buttons, and on the other side a full SDK with buffered, float pencil coordinates, pencil pressure, etc.

IMHO even the mouse handling should be turned into such an SDK - a mouse could input floating point coordinates as well (to tweak knobs with more accuracy).

I guess I'm looking for two things that I can think of.

64 bit support/integration, which I don't see anything about.......is it assumed?

And what is going to throw a curveball to the 3rd party developers..........ie.........all the crap I use and how it will/won't work. :hihi:

Finally something that would rival OSX?

AFAIK, Vista will also have a 32 and 64 bit edition.

It isn't out yet.. they just released beta 1 about a week ago. Vista won't be out until late 06.

BTW - There's already a concept virus written for Vista.

Post

... although the virus uses the new ms scripting shell (that's apparently pretty powerful, not unlike proper unix shells) which isn't apparently going to be included in the standard vista by default ... just the server version later.
never stop loving music.

There's a virus written for a new scripting engine that isn't coming with Vista, but was being used with the beta programme. Just a tad different.

Among the many new features and user enhancements the Vista development team is bringing to you is the need to buy a new monitor with a DRM'd signal path if you plan on viewing high definition video at..er...high definition.

You see, Major Internet Content Providers such as Sony won't provide Major Internet Content unless they can be assured that your plans to steal and redistribute for profit said Major Internet Content have been thwarted. It's the only way to ensure the continued flow of high quality family entertainment programming you've come to expect from Major Internet Content Providers.

You are, after all, each and EVERY one of you, thieves.

Coming soon: the secure Audio path

... and eventually you'll need ears and eyelids with tiny padlocks - the digital media player creates a key you can use to open them after it's clear that you have the right to the content you're about to view :)

I can forsee Droves of people abstaining from upgrades to avoid the Big brother rights mgmt schemes. But Im sure that Xp will have a service pack that rolls this crap in along with other security fixes to force you into installing it.

I figgered out my new Sig " f**k SONY!!! "

Post

i think vista will have more DRM than any of Apple's future OSes. Since microosft brianwashed all the content providers that vista is the only platform for secure playback.

Shiny new desktop image that won't run OpenGL properly. Not that it matters, Vista won't support OpenGL above version 1.4 anyway.
3D/CAD people, look elsewhere.
