Does it exist?

There's an old Reaktor ensemble in the user library called "Oberheim 4-Voice". I've never heard a real SEM so it's hard to compare... seriously doubt that it's that close an emulation.

Post

I'll see if I can find it. Strange that none of the commercial vsti makers has stept in yet. It's a reknown classic that is rare and not cheap to get.

It seems there could be a market for a good emulation.

No.

Daniel Maurer has made Classic Oberheim 1,2, and 3 sound banks for Rhino 2. Info is here:

http://bigtick.pastnotecut.org/djsmaurer/

mp3's:

http://bigtick.pastnotecut.org/djsmaurer/co1/co1.html

http://bigtick.pastnotecut.org/djsmaurer/co1/co2.html

http://bigtick.pastnotecut.org/djsmaurer/co1/co3.html

Cost is $12 per bank or $30 for all three.

Of course you need Rhino 2 as well!

That's the closest I've seen in a soft synth.

I'm sure others will chime in, it's a problem with using the name, now owned by Gibson. Arturia were possibly going to do one but gave up because of legal issues(?)

I tried the Reaktor ensemble, it sounds OK, not a true emulation though it seems - judging from SEM samples I heard - and a bit buggy.

The Rhino presets are from Oberheim Matrix samples, which is a different beast. A bit more sofisticated and less raw.

I found some sound samples on the net, any other vst that makes such sounds?

The last site's samples are from a so-called "2 voice", which is a combination of 2 SEM modules.

I totally agree. I don't even know of a good OB era emulation. It is a classic. To me an SEM beats an ARP 2600 in sound quality and there are several of those.

Really? That's a bunch of schiznit. Gibson sucks. Their "Oberheim" line has been a joke at least until the M1K was discontinued. Stupid. What about GMedia? They're French. They could give a f**k about Gibson.

I have the real thing. Never heard anything which came close to emulating it. Then again, there are so many other great softsynths, so who cares?
Incomplete list of my gear: 1/8" audio input jack.

www.hollowsun.com/vintage has OB-8 samples. I think they are in Akai. Some of them, like the poly brass, are quite good.

I just want that SEM sound, probably for the same reason as some guitar players just need the Stratocaster sound. I like it and it has become part of our "common consciousness", which appeals to me.

If your SEM happens to be for sale, please contact me.
